Happy New Year 2022! We hope and pray that you are aware of God’s love and peace around and in you in these days. It is so amazing to spend time focused on God’s gift of Jesus, “God-with-us”!!! The past year has been great in some ways and quite difficult in other ways. But through it all, we praise God that he is with us!

It has been encouraging to hear testimony from pastors and others that we have discipled in D for D. We have heard great stories of how some took times of lockdown to be more intentional in discipling their kids to be whole-life disciples of Jesus. When churches were closed, many in our groups started times of worship and Bible study with their families. Some pastors have shared how God helped provide for all of their needs through very difficult financial times due to COVID-19. Many people have not had enough to eat, but God has helped these pastors to steward what what he gives them and they have continued to have enough.

Yesterday two women from the U.S. arrived in Rwanda and will be here for almost three weeks. They are both seeking direction from God about a sense of being called to be missionaries. Would you please pray with us for their time with us?

Next week we will be visited by a few EFM leaders who will be with us in important conversations about God’s mission to bring people in all nations to himself with the Evangelical Friends of Rwanda and then in Burundi with Evangelical Friends there. Would you please pray for those conversations? The Rwanda meeting will be on the 13th and 14th. The Burundi meeting will be on the 17th and 18th. Please pray that God will raise up African Friends to go as missionaries and that the churches will catch the vision for taking the gospel to the nations!

Please pray for blessing in conversations, for the Lord to speak to these future missionaries, our safety in trips (COVID-19 is spreading rapidly in this part of the world as it is elsewhere), and for my family as I will be in Burundi for several days and then mandatory quarantine when I return to Rwanda.

Brad

“What has the Pandemic been like in Rwanda?”

We were asked this thoughtful question many times during our stay in the U.S. (May 2020-July 2021) and have reported that, like everywhere else, it has been very difficult. Various lockdowns, masking mandates, and social distancing and movement guidelines have seemed to be very helpful at containing the spread of illness, and for that we are extremely thankful! However, isolation, lack of ability to work and to worship the Lord with others have had severe consequences both physically and emotionally to many people whose livelihoods depend on day-to-day jobs and whose hearts depend on being with other people in every situation.

While we were gone, the Lord sustained the leaders in the Evangelical Friends Church of Rwanda (EFC-R) and gave them creative ideas such as taking turns writing and sending devotions to each other by phone messages, joining in regular video calls to encourage each other, recording sermons, and responding to local churches to help their most needy church and community members. They have also initiated the Pastors’ Development Fund to help pastors with their livelihood. With EFM joining in partnership, pastors can develop income-generating plans and work with a local group of leaders to refine that plan and take out a loan when needed. This is exciting to see pastors more able to take care of their families as well as their congregations, and we hope that these bi-vocational skills and experience will be useful in the future as we dream of pastors and leaders being sent to where there are no churches, even across borders to the mission fields!

In D for D, specifically, leaders focused on discipling their families, and we have seen encouraging testimonies of families growing closer to Jesus and all that he wants them to be. Without being able to travel, they’ve remained connected to Congo and Burundi discipleship groups by phone, encouraging them to continue following up on their group members’ progress. Through all this, we believe the Lord is empowering and growing leaders in discipleship, and we pray that growth will continue exponentially into the future!

Brad has embarked on a challenging but exciting new journey! He has started a Masters’ program through Fuller Seminary (online) for the purpose of learning and preparing for the future task of helping our African friends to raise up, train, and send their own missionaries.

Though we originally thought we would only spend a few months in the United States, living life through a full year with our extended family nearby was very special. Our transition back to Rwanda has had its ups and downs, but we are very grateful that we have mostly settled back into our life and home in Rwanda at this point.

Sarai (almost 9) and Gideon (6) have enjoyed being back at Virunga Valley Academy (VVA) for school, learning and playing with friends. They both have expressed missing their family in the states, especially their cousins, but we can see that they are appreciating some of the special people and opportunities in Rwanda too.

Ian (1) has not skipped a beat since touching down in Rwanda. He loves exploring, running, and playing everywhere. He loves going on walks to see the neighborhood goats, cows, and vehicles on the nearby road. We are thankful that he also loves reading books and has gotten to know and love our Rwandan friends that work in and around our home.

Once again it has been a while since we have written. Thank you for your continued partnership with us through prayer and finances! We look forward to getting back into a more regular rhythm of keeping you updated. A lot has happened since we wrote last. We had a great trip to Colorado. The Lord gave us some special time with a couple of the churches who partner with us in ministry. We praise God for his help and blessing in so many ways!

This update includes several things:
1. An update about the Future Missionaries Retreat we had at the end of May.
2. News about a trip Brad is going on with EFM leaders and future missionaries.
3. Our plans to return to Rwanda at the end of July.
4. An update on our family.
5. Some specific things to pray about with us.

It was a special time with the Lord and some of his children from Evangelical Friends Churches all over the U.S. We had 15 people come who are sensing that God might be leading them towards becoming missionaries. We also had 18 former or current missionaries/mission leaders who came as mentors, to join the future missionaries in their journey of discernment. During the retreat we had times of:

Worship through singing.

Teaching and discussion about various topics related to missions.

One-on-one times for future missionaries to meet with a mentor/mentor couple.

Solitude for each one to sit and reflect with God about what he/she was learning.

Small group discussions to share and encourage one another.

Fellowship around wonderful meals together.

Free time for informal conversations.

We do not know all that the Lord is doing or will do through that time of retreat together, but we expect him to continue the good work that he is doing in each one who was there. It was a joy to be able to be a part of that time in this next phase of God sending out missionaries from among the Evangelical Friends Churches of North America. And we pray that each one and many others will have eyes to see the Lord, ears to hear his call and hearts and bodies to respond in obedience to serve in missionaries.

2. A Trip With Future Missionaries

From June 30th through July 13th, Brad will be a part of a trip to visit the Evangelical Friends in Aguascalientes, Mexico. He will be traveling with Matt Macy, Edwin & Maria Giron (former EFM missionaries to Aguascalientes), and seven individuals who are sensing that God might be calling them to join him as missionaries. This trip will include times of worshiping and encouraging the believers there, doing ministry with them, as well as a lot of time for learning and discussion as a team with Mexican Friends Church leaders. We are trusting that God will bless this trip, make the team a blessing and that he will also be speaking into each future missionary’s heart and mind, giving direction and affirming his plan for them.

3. Our Plan to Return to Rwanda

When we came to the U.S. at the end of May 2020, we planned to be here for three months. For various reasons we have had to extend our time here five different times! COVID-19 certainly impacted our schedule in all of this! Also, Brad’s back and neck issues were a big issue, too. While he is not completely healed, he is much better. Thank you for praying with us about this! We were also exhausted and needed a break from culture and ministry so that the Lord could restore and renew us. He did that, too! He made us lie down on green pastures, led us beside still waters, and restored our souls (Psalm 23).

We now plan to return to Rwanda at the end of July. COVID-19 cases are increasing quite a lot right now in Rwanda. So, we are praying for the Lord to give relief and healing in Rwanda and worldwide. We are also praying that God would draw people to himself through these difficult times!

4. An Update on Our Family

At the time of writing, several of us are dealing with sniffles and sore throats, but in general we have been doing well. We have been doing a lot of list-making, sorting, packing, shopping, visiting people, and running errands to prepare for our move back to Rwanda (the list feels overwhelmingly long!) We are going to miss our family and friends here so much, but we also are eager to be in our Rwandan home. The kids feel this way too, and we are trying to remind each other that it’s normal and right to feel several emotions at the same time, like grief and eagerness, stress and peace, fear and joy.

5. Please Pray With Us

That God would protect and take care of us while we are away from each other during the Mexico trip.

That God would help us get everything done that needs to be done, and that we would trust him in the midst of the chaos.

That God would heal Rwandans of COVID-19 and that case numbers would go down quickly so that they and we can get back to normal. Also, He would take care of us even when things aren’t normal yet, and that we would still be obedient and trusting.

Thank you so much!

Love,

Brad & Chelsea

It has been a long while since we have communicated with you! We hope and pray that you are doing well. We are so thankful for Jesus and his life, death, and resurrection that we celebrated last month on Easter. Jesus offers redemption, healing, joy, peace and his life to us, and we are so thankful!

The Lord has been so good to us! Brad continues to focus quite a bit of time rebuilding and strengthening his back and neck muscles. We are happy to share that the Lord has answered and continues to answer our/your prayers for healing Brad’s body. Thank you for praying with us! The Lord has been using this time to do some important work in us. We are feeling much more ready to be and do what God has called us to be and do.

We are so thankful for your partnership with us in ministry. We believe that each one who prays with us and/or partners in finances is a vital player on the ministry team. Thank you for your help that enables ministry to continue in Central Africa.

The Lord is still working in Central Africa. It is a joy to hear from our friends and colleagues in Rwanda. They regularly send us updates of what God is doing among them and through their ministry. I don’t know if this ever happens to you, but sometimes we feel like the weight of the ministry is on our shoulders. But it is so good to see that the Lord is continuing his ministry through our Rwandan Friends even when we aren’t there!

We have been back in the U.S. for much longer than we had planned for! We have had to postpone our return to Rwanda several times for various reasons. Most recently we have decided with our EFM leaders that we will return to Rwanda at the end of July. This will enable our kids to finish the school year here in Wichita. And it will also enable us to be a part in some important EFM events for future missionaries. At the end of May/beginning of June we will help with a Future Missionaries Retreat. We helped lead one of these back in 2009 and we look forward to another retreat. Then, in early July, we will go on a short-term mission trip with future missionaries. The vision is that this trip will be a time for us to walk alongside future missionaries in a cross-cultural context.

As you know,

We believe that the Lord is leading us to work with our Rwandan, Burundian, and Congolese Friends to lead a movement of whole-life discipleship, church planting, and missionary sending.

Would you please pray:

That the Lord would continue to lead some of you or others to partner with us in new ways: either through intentional prayer, regular financial giving, and/or becoming missionaries with us in Africa. We are still looking for those who would join us in each of these ways. You can learn more about the ministry at https://catalog.friendsmission.com/carpenter. And there are several videos and a photo album at https://friendsmission.com/carpenter-virtual-deputation/.

If the Lord leads you to pray more intentionally, let us know and we will share a few options for that.

If the Lord leads you to partner with us through finances you can learn more and set this up at https://catalog.friendsmission.com/carpenter.

That God would help those planning the future missionary events and that he would be helping and guiding those feeling called to missions.

For God to continue and multiply his discipleship in Rwanda – and that he would be calling. Rwandans, Burundians, and Congolese to take the message of the kingdom beyond themselves.

For Brad’s continued physical healing and rehabilitation.

For peace for the whole family since they have been living outside some of their “normal” rhythms for a while now.

We are very thankful for time with family over the Christmas holidays!

Financial Commitments – 93%

The financial commitments percentage assumes that each financial partner will be able to continue giving in the same way. We are in the process of checking with our existing partners about this (if you haven’t already let us know, you can just hit reply to this email to tell us. Thank you!)

If you’re not already, would you prayerfully consider making a monthly giving commitment (even a few dollars) towards a whole-life disciple-making movement in Africa? One-time gifts are important, but monthly giving commitments help us be able to go back to and remain in Africa.

Gracias. Que Jesús esté contigo siempre.

A Story of a Transformed Life in Rwanda

Submitted by Brad and Chelsea Carpenter

Christine: My name is Akingeneye Christine, I am a believer and a member of the Rugarama Friends Church. I have a husband and two children. I was trained in the D for D seminars. In the seminars I learned many things that helped me to change many things in my life.

I want to share my testimony about the transformation in my family in relation to the “4 key relationships” before being trained and after being trained.

My relationship with God: Before whole-life discipleship seminars I believed that going to church services and being in the choir was enough in my life with God. But after the seminars I set a goal to read the Bible two times per week and my family takes time each week to praise God together. During the children’s school vacations, we each take turn teaching from the Bible. The purpose of this is to disciple our children to study the Bible.

My relationship with Creation (Stewardship): Before being discipled I planted crops in our fields however I felt like at the moment without a plan which meant that the crops did not grow well, and we have poor harvests. After the seminars things changed very much. I now use fertilizer and plant with modern methods which has increased our harvests greatly! Now the field that used to produce 2 tons of crops produced 4 tons. Things have changed a lot! I planted fruit trees: guavas, mango, lemon, and avocado trees. They are growing well, and we are starting to harvest guavas.

My relationship with others: I used to visit people every once in a while, but with no plan. But now I make plans for who I will visit and when and I put those visits into our family budget. During these days of Coronavirus and mostly being at home, I have visited seven families.

My relationship with myself: Before being discipled I thought that drinking water was worthless. I mainly drank tea, porridge, and juice. But that changed after the seminars. Now I drink 1 liter of water each day. I have also taught my family to only drink boiled water (rather than bad water). Each week I exercise once by running 4 kilometers. As a family, during vacations, we play games as a family like cards and igisoro (a Rwandan game similar to Mancala).

The D for D trainings were impactful in many ways. I now have a plan for working and I set end dates for each task. In the pursuit of increasing our family’s resources I started a business of buying wood and then selling it to schools in our area and this business is going really well. Also I now have a bank account for savings and that is helping me save for the future. And I am in a savings group that helps me save each week.

The D for D teachings had a part in everything I have mentioned. I praise God because he is always with me and I praise the people who had a part in preparing the D for D lessons. I desire to see these lessons reaching many more people because they are very important for our everyday lives. Thank you. May Jesus be with you always.

Lusungu, the Legal Representative of EFC-Congo, reported that Friends in nearby cities of Mulongwe, Kasenge and Songo are also impacted. Lusungu said on the evening of the 19th:

“Uvira is in the South Kivu Province in the Eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, about 25 kilometres from Bujumbura, Burundi. Uvira is made up of three communes, each with a big river: Kalimabenge River, Mulongwe River, and Kavimbra River; which all feed from the mountains into Tanganyika Lake. Uvira resides next to the lake and up into the mountains.

During the night of April 17, heavy rains caused enormous flooding while the rain continued. Then even heavier rains came on the 19th and in the parts of the city where these rivers meet Tanganyika Lake , Uvira became like a lake. Many families have died and houses destroyed, while the total count is unknown at this time due to ongoing flooding.

From Kavimbira to Mulongwe many of the people are displaced to Kalundu Commune, some staying with families, and others staying in schools and churches.

Up to this point, no emergencyfood or drinking water assistance has been received, or any other assistance to the victims of the flood, from the government or anyone else. EFC-Congo is calling on members of EFC-Uvira churches to welcome flood victims and offer them support.”

Out of 129 EFC-Congo members who are affected by the flood so far (as of Sunday, April 19):

17 families have completely lost their homes.

33 families have heavily damaged houses.

79 families are hosting other families who lost their homes.

So far, there are no reports of deaths among EFC-Congo church members.

EFM is sending emergency funds to EFC-Congo in Uvira today, to help in assisting both church members and members of the community that the church is helping. Brad Carpenter and David Thomas are helping EFM monitor the situation with readiness to send more emergency aid later this week and next week as appropriate.
