Our PEFIM BOE together with myself and Sonia arrived here last Friday to visit and lead an overnight Youth Camp in Danao II. It was attended by 42 youth from our churches here in Calbayog and a guest church.

We had Spirit-filled worship in the evening and powerful preaching of his word. Sister Marie led some games in the mornings and the following day I once again preached a message from the life of our Lord Jesus Christ from a passage in Luke chapter four.

At the end of the event, we distributed dental kits and school supplies for children and students ranging from elementary to college. One hundred children and youth received these blessings!

Sister Sonia and Brother Jeff joined with Higher Ground Evangelical Friends Church in Danao II with Elder Dioscoro.

We praise and thank God for the favorable weather and plentiful food during our stay in these different churches. We were exceedingly blessed with our fellowship with our brethren as we study God’s word together and sing songs to him. God is doing great things in these churches that we visited.

The passion of our brethren in serving the Lord is truly inspiring. They faced many challenges during the two years of strict lockdown but their faith in our Lord Jesus persevered.

They still face many challenges even today owing to the economic downturn as a result of the pandemic. Together we learned to depend on the Lord alone and to trust him even more in the face of difficulties and challenges.

Thank you very much for your continued prayers and partnership with us. We appreciate very much your prayers and partnership with us in the work of the Lord here in Samar! Our good Lord bless you as well as much as he has blessed us in this mission trip!

Our good Lord bless you, your family and ministry!

Queridos amigos,
Thank you for praying for me on my last trip! Your prayers made a difference, and I was aware of Holy Spirit’s presence and Papa’s favor and grace.

In the Philippines I appreciated working with some amazing Discipling for Development (D4D) International Mentors- Gary and Merri Lee Hipp who coached us for eight years in Rwanda, Wency de la Viña who heads up the Philippine Navigator D4D work, Ronald Mazune from Mission: Moving Mountains Uganda who was also one of our coaches in Rwanda, and my fellow coach to Thailand Scott Purser. I enjoyed being able to bring stories from our experience in Rwanda to highlight various lessons with examples of how D4D works within a church setting.

Every morning we walked or jogged to Clark field in the town of Los Baños in the middle of a university campus with other people doing their morning exercises. For three of the mornings, I walked to the middle of the field in the bright sun with my flags. I love sowing hope, by declaring God’s purposes in various situations I am interceding for and by swinging my flags! I feel Papa’s pleasure and I love adoration and declarative, breakthrough-intercession before God’s throne.

In Thailand Scott and I had five wonderful days of coaching together. Yosapa and his team caught us up to where they are at currently. They also asked good questions. I wanted to give our Discipling for Development team an example of what it looks like to go through the Mobilization Phase that they have begun.

To do this I led the Way Foundation staff through a one-day simulation, which in a community normally takes nine months. In our D4D work we train leaders to take whole communities through this process, For this simulation, the families of The Way Foundation staff were the community. We took them through lessons (gathering all the data of their strengths as well as the barriers impeding their growth, analyzing this data with root cause analyses and force field analysis, then prioritizing the list and discovering their curriculum). This was Scott’s first time doing this as a simulation, and he said, “I’m with you, Dave, and if this ships sinks, I’m going down with you.” He was able to support me well and take some of the lessons, so it didn’t all rest on me.

The day went well, and we finished with a good syllabus (list of topics) the Way Foundation families can study and be discipled in over the next year or so.

One of the ladies here, Majise borrowed my flags during worship on Wednesday. It was her first time to use them. It was so fun to watch her worship! Scott and I went in together and gave her the flags on the day we left. She was so happy! May they bless her as much as they blessed me!

I had a great 2nd day with the whole Way Foundation group! People connected the scriptures well with our process. Jesus’ main message was “repent for the kingdom of heaven is near!” Repent means “have a different thought,” “change direction,” recognize thinking that causes us to “miss the mark (sin)” and change it! Romans 12:2 says, “do not conform any longer to the pattern of thinking of this world, (holding us down), but be transformed by renewing your mind, then you will know his good pleasing and perfect will.” This work of coming to understand our faulty thinking and choosing better thinking combined with our heart’s cry to see God glorified, to see his kingdom come and his will accomplished in our lives as it is accomplished in heaven, doing this moves us into the abundant life purposes that God has for us.

I ended with a short testimony of our community of Musovu, in Rwanda and how they discovered and determined their syllabus plan for discipling their church community, and the amazing results that are still ongoing. Then we laid hands on Yosapa and Manat our Discipling for Development leaders working directly in three villages and prayed for them.

On Thursday we took an in-depth look at the negative fruit of the tree of bad financial management. Then we looked at the root causes. Afterwards we went through The Problem-Solving Process on financial stewardship.

I especially enjoyed leading with four people: myself facilitating in tandem with Pleo, an energetic young lady translating between Thai and English, Manat scribing in Thai, and Jason helping Manat with the Thai and then scribing in English (so I could visually know what is happening). It was a dynamic, fun and insightful process!

Before I left for this trip a friend in a prayer meeting said that I would operate in a new kingly authority. I felt God’s grace and I functioned in a new level of kingly, confident anointing. It was good to experience this. Thanks for praying for me and being part of releasing this gift for me!!!

I would love to have your prayer support over the next two weeks as I travel to the Philippines and Thailand. In the Philippines I will be joining our Navigator Discipling For Development team for two days as a part of their trip focused in the town of San Pablo. They have an independent group of churches who decided to join them. I’ve got experience in Rwanda with rolling out D4D in a church as a community setting. We will have a big coaching group, including, Gary and Merri Lee Hipp, who coached us in Rwanda, and Ronald Mazune who began his coaching with us from Uganda will be there as well as my fellow Thailand Navigator coach Scott Purser. We have one day for preparation and two days for a vision-casting seminar on how to disciple our local churches holistically.

Scott and I have a week in Thailand. We arrive late Friday night and have some time on Saturday to rest. Sunday I’ll give the message in Chalee’s church. Monday morning Scott will share a devotional message with the all The Way Foundation staff. Then we will meet with the smaller D4D team to get an update on where they are at, and what their main questions are. Tuesday is with the D4D team leaders and those who work with them in the communities.

Wednesday and Thursday we have the larger D4D and Way Foundation team together. My ambitious aim for these two days is to give them an overview of the Mobilization Phase by experientially leading them through the process we take our communities through. This process normally takes a year or more, but I want to do this over a day and a half. I plan to finish with a few hours on Thursday focused on working through the Problem Solving Process on one specific topic they have already been working through (financial stewardship). Friday will be focused on the D4D leaders again, making sure we have a good plan for the next four months.

Pray for excellent translation in English and Thai. Pray for Scott and I to do well on our feet, thinking clearly and communicating clearly! Pray for quick time-zone adjustment. Pray for sensitivity to Holy Spirit all along the way! Pray the Philippines group could catch a vision for Discipling their churches and surrounding communities, and that they would finish with some clear next steps.

Prayer Requests for June 6 – 9, Monday – Thursday:
Our team will visit the town of San Pablo, about an hour west of Los Baños. Over the past few years, a new church-based Discipling for Development Navigator ministry has started in San Pablo. We will facilitate a training with the leaders in the basics of biblical, holistic ministry. They are now looking to form a team specifically to reach out to their communities.”The hearing ear and the seeing eye, the LORD has made them both.” Proverbs 20:12

Pray for discernment and wisdom as we meet with this new team. What do they know? What do they need? What do they hope to accomplish? How can we best serve them?

Prayer Requests for June 12 – 18, Monday – Friday
This will be a full week of engaging with the Lahu leaders from The Way Foundation. Over the course of the week, we will meet with the staff, the Discipling for Development team, and the leaders of the teams, seeking to come alongside them in where they are at, where they want to be and what steps can be most helpful in the next six months. We will also facilitate training in how to train leaders in the church and community for holistic community development.

“I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” John 15:5

Pray for strength, wisdom, and the Holy Spirit to give us the direction for the week.

Recently, one of the pastors of a church plant, was informed that a group had a kill order on his life. The cause of the order was that the pastor was accused of receiving aid from the army. The pastor himself was a former group member who found Christ and left the group, mostly on friendly terms. However, the accusation carried weight. The pastor was informed out of a courtesy by another friend of his. At first, he wanted to run away, in fact he hid out at a friend’s house in another city. As his options and the fate of the church were discussed, several other individuals in the church and other former members in other churches spoke up. They said don’t run and let’s try to talk with them. Everyone prayed, and it took a week, but the local group allowed the pastor to present his evidence. The pastor spent two days with the group, and they concluded that he was innocent and that someone else had become envious of the church and all the good they were doing, especially their livelihood projects. During this time the pastor was also able to share the gospel message with over a hundred members present. Our pastor now has an open door, though it is a dangerous undertaking. But, as he has said, nothing is impossible for God to do in the midst of this unusual climate, especially when all you can be is a man of peace for Christ.

Thank you for praying for Jinky Twaddell while she recently fought COVID-19 and was hospitalized in the Philippines, where Roy and Jinky are serving. We at EFM are praising the Lord that Jinky improved and was released from the hospital. Her oxygen levels have not yet returned to normal. She is doing physical therapy to gain strength and lung capacity and she is using a little bit of oxygen when she sleeps from an oxygen concentrator. Also, our condolences go to Roy and Jinky and family, as Jinky’s mother passed away with COVID-19. Please pray for Roy and Jinky during these challenging days for them!

The total out of pocket cost to the Twaddells for her hospitalization was over $35,000. EFM would like to invite you to make a donation to help cover these costs.

Thank you for your prayers,
They were among the first EFM missionaries to draw our attention to unreached people groups in limited-access countries and how to go about reaching them. It has been a long, eventful, and fruitful journey!

As you will see in their message below, Roy and Jinky are feeling led to retire from EFM at the end of this year. Lord willing, the Twaddells will travel from the Philippines to the U.S. around October of this year and spend time with those who have supported them along the way through prayer and finances. It will be a time to celebrate what the Lord has done! Then they will return to the Philippines where they plan to live and continue in ministry as the Lord opens doors for them to do so. Since the world we live in is still feeling the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, please pray that this visit to the U.S. will be possible.

On behalf of EFM I would like to express our appreciation to Roy and Jinky for their faithfulness in ministry and their passion to reach the lost for Christ. We are proud of you!

Here’s the announcement from the Twaddells:

This 2021 year has been unusual. Originally we were scheduled to be back in the USA for our furlough/deputation, but that did not happen. We do pray that we will be able to come towards the end of the year around October/November.

First, we want to thank all our Prayer and Financial Partners for your support of God’s work through us. Together we have seen God’s kingdom come and the salvation of Christ revealed to many.

We had hoped that we would be there right now to make this announcement in person. However, circumstances do not allow this to happen. Jinky and I have been praying over the last two years about God’s direction, which is why we came to the Philippines. It was our thought at the time to stay two more terms and then retire in country. We have prayed and discerned with our close prayer team. We have decided to retire at the end of this term which is December 2021. Our decision then is one of being a good steward and we felt it best to retire, thus freeing up resources for Friends to support new unreached fields.

We have always listened to the voice of the Holy Spirit. After 28 years with EFM and several more as Friends, we are moving on to the next stage of that journey. We will continue to fellowship with Friends here and in the USA when we visit.

Roy and Jinky

“You shall give him the first fruits of your grain, your new wine, and your oil,

and the first shearing of your sheep.”

As we look forward to 2021, our prayer is that we look forward to what new journeys the Lord has in store for us and what new “First Fruits” will we deliver this year?

2020 has been a challenge to us in many ways: personal, physical, and spiritual. For us, it was the separation from family and friends. Although we could Zoom and see our family and friends, the shared meals and free-flowing conversations, just not the same. Spiritually there is something about physical presence that is enlivening, for instance, a touch of the hand, a hug, or the kiss of friendship and love.

So what does this have to do with the First Fruits in Deuteronomy 18:4? It has to deal with his presence amid challenges. The livelihood projects from 2020 occurred in such a manner that we were not personally present. Normally we would visit the various sites to encourage and share in whatever was taking place, both highs, and lows. Yet, we were able to share the concerns and joys in and through his presence. And in the end, the simple bag of rice from the Capiz Friends Church farming project confirmed this to us. One of the interesting events of bringing the first fruits of the harvest to the temple was the joy of being with so many family and friends that you had not seen and the meeting of new friends. This has shown us that we can take joy in knowing that we will be together again, in this life or the next. The pictured bag of rice (below) is from Capiz’s first harvest.

Spiritually, we have seen this as a time of increased study of the Word and prayer. Social Media has opened the door for us to be more intimate in praying for one another. Often someone will post the need for prayer; the overwhelming responses are a testament to God’s people sharing these burdens, sometimes with the simple response-Praying. Students in our FEAST school are committed to grow and learn as well. They seized the moment to dive into studies that they might not do otherwise, had there not been a pandemic.

So, as we look forward to 2021 and all the new challenges that we face, our prayer is that whatever you will face, remember that you do so in, and with, the presence of the Lord. Look forward in Joy, to bringing whatever “First Fruits” that will come out of your life; as you bring them to the Altar of the Lord.

We have been receiving some stories from our missionaries and national leaders about what God is doing in the midst of the pandemic. We are sharing these stories with you so that you can be encouraged and also remember to keep lifting up our brothers and sisters in Christ around the world in prayer.

This story comes from Samuel de la Cruz who is the senior pastor of Community of Hope Fellowship. This is a congregation in the Metro Manila area that belongs to the Evangelical Friends yearly meeting in the Philippines known by its acronym PEFIM.

The work God has been doing in our church during the pandemic is a continuing act of his grace that started at the beginning of the Community of Hope Fellowship. To know a little bit of the background will help us understand how the amazing grace of God is making an impact on the lives of its members and even in the community. The church was more like a youth fellowship when it began four years ago. It was started with what we consider a holistic approach- a divergence from a dichotomy of spiritual and so-called secular life. We have incorporated spirituality to the existential experience of the members. An example of this is to give high regard to education of the youth so they can become more capable people as well as believers. We believe that becoming a good steward of the talent and the potential God has given these youth is integral to our way of worship. By supporting their education as much as we can, we create opportunities to becoming productive Christians. I would like to share short stories of our two members, Pastor Ryan (youth pastor) and Sister Jigs (children ministry head).

A jeepney driver known to the family of Pastor Ryan went to them asking for help since he has not been able to return to his job for three months already. Pastor Ryan lent him some money even though he knew very well that the man would not likely be able to return the amount due to the pandemic situation. Pastor Ryan also helped the church in our effort to provide some relief goods to at least 40 families. Pastor Ryan is a regular employee having worked for three years now in his job as automotive technician. Prior to getting his job he was a typical young man who didn’t seem interested in education. The church guided him towards having direction in life as part of his faith walk. We invited him to dine at an all-you-can-eat restaurant and offered him finances to enroll in a short course. He refused the money saying the meal was enough to convince him. Six months later he was among the top graduates of his class and landed immediately the job he has now.

Sister Jigs dreamed of going up on stage for her graduation. She recently graduated but without the usual ceremony due to COVID-19. This August she will be starting to work as a call center agent in the metropolis. She had three jobs offered to her, so she got the one of her choice. This is such a big blessing for her since literally millions are losing their jobs at this moment. Sister Jigs is our Sunday school teacher together with her older sister who graduated last year cum laude. They both received financial assistance from the church for their education. In addition to teaching the children Bible stories, Sister Jigs is also teaching them how to read and write.

God has blessed the youth through the hard work of the church. The progress has been gradual, limited and financially painstaking. The church took big risks. It’s like placing all your eggs in one basket. We had the experience of one of our scholars quitting his studies after one year in order to take a job which he later lost in this pandemic. For those that have achieved their goals, they are like an oasis in this time of pandemic. The church was able to give relief goods to at least 40 families three times during the nationwide lockdown. We would like to thank EFM for your recent support to our relief effort and for your prayers. Keep us in your prayers as greater challenges are becoming more eminent in this new normal, especially with the new requirements needed for online education of the youth.

So far we have been able to send emergency funds to one ministry and five yearly meetings to help with needs created by the spread of COVID-19. One of those yearly meetings is the one called PEFIM in the Philippines. Their director, Pastor Crisanto de la Cruz, sent us the following report that shows how COVID-19 is affecting the yearly meeting as well as how the emergency funds are being used.

Pastor Cris writes…

“Our churches here in Metro Manila and Luzon area have ceased gathering for worship in our worship places for almost two months now. This directly affected 11 churches since the beginning of lockdown. Unfortunately, in the last two weeks our churches in the Visayas have also been ordered to stop gathering for worship. This affected another 7 churches. I am leading worship every Sunday via livestream for all our churches and members.

The Lord is really good and enabled us to bring His message to wider and more diverse audience through our livestream. I’ve been getting very encouraging response from our weekly audience from both members of churches belonging to PEFIM and others who have just heard the message watching us through Facebook.

But the fact that we cannot gather together for worship in our local churches meant that Tithes and Offering has effectively ceased for all our 18 churches. That includes our main church here in Pasig since we do not have the means to effect online giving. Needless to say, our Pastors have lost their significant source of income.

Since the beginning of the lockdown on March 14, PEFIM has provided, in two occasions, Emergency Financial Assistance to the pastors and workers of the first eleven churches that were directly affected. It also enabled us to extend financial assistance to nine stranded students and faculty staff from a Bible School in Samar.

Our churches, particularly Community of Hope Fellowship, Midtown (Mabuting Katiwala) Friends Church and Philippine Evangelical Friends Church, have provided and are continuing to provide financial and food assistance to our members and the poor and vulnerable in our respective communities. We endeavor to extend God’s love and the gospel of Jesus Christ through our practical service. We are exceedingly grateful to the Lord for His provisions in many ways and through EFM’s continued partnership with us.

With the funds you have sent us we are able to do a third batch of Emergency Financial Assistance for our pastors and leaders, this time for all 18 of our churches. The beneficiaries will also include a group of 13 laborers from Calbayog, Samar who has been stranded in Manila since the lockdown.

Our good Lord reward you for your generosity and care for our people.”
