Lusungu ha informado que desde principios de junio, en la Alta Meseta de Fizi, Uvira y Mwenga, hay enfrentamientos entre grupos de rebeldes y el ejército del gobierno congoleño. La mayoría de las personas del área han sido desplazadas a la meseta de Moyen (centro) en Mutambala y Rutabura. Toda la Iglesia Amigos Kivumu de La Junta Anual-Congo y casi todos los que están entre las Iglesias Amigos del Área de Mi’enge se encuentran entre las víctimas y las personas desplazadas. Muchos han perdido a familiares y casi todas sus posesiones y ahora viven en malas condiciones. Las siguientes imágenes son de algunos de los refugios improvisados en el campamento de Tubuki.

Lusungu dijo: “Temprano en la mañana del 16 de julio, la aldea de Kipupu, que es la aldea líder del sector de Itombwe, fue atacada y quemada por los rebeldes. Lusungu, who is the General Superintendent of EFC-Congo, has been passing on news to EFM about a new humanitarian crisis in a part of DR Congo where we have Evangelical Friends Churches, and many members. David Thomas, who served with his family as missionaries in Rwanda for many years, and who now serves with EFM as a Whole-Life Discipleship Mentor, has been in close contact with Lusungu over recent months, because EFM has an exciting, developing Discipling for Development group in Uvira, Congo in which David is involved. David is not only advocating for prayer and support to our Friends in Congo, but also helping EFM with news from them during this time.

Lusungu has reported that since the beginning of June, in the Haute (high) Plateau of Fizi, Uvira and Mwenga, there is fighting between groups of rebels and the Congolese government army. Most people from the area have been displaced to the Moyen (middle) Plateau in Mutambala and Rutabura. All of EFC-Congo’s Kivumu Friends Church and almost all of those among Mi’enge Area Friends Churches are among the victims and displaced people. Many have lost family members as well as almost all of their possessions and are now living in poor conditions. The pictures below are of some of the makeshift shelters in the Tubuki camp.

Lusungu said, “Early in the morning on July 16, Kipupu village, which is the leading village of Itombwe sector, was attacked and burned by rebels. In the Moyen (middle) Plateau, there are now 72 Evangelical Friends Church families, with 112 women, 95 men, and 375 children, for a total of 577 people among thousands of displaced people. In our local church we are collecting some things to assist them, but the needs are great and we need others to come alongside us to help us at this time. The people need the basics of food, clothes, medicine, books (Bibles), shelter and so on. It is very sad to hear about and see the conditions that people, including our church members, are living in. Please let others know about our situation and continue to pray for peace in DRC in general and in the Haute Plateau in particular.”

Please join Evangelical Friends around the world as we pray for peace in this area. Also, please pray for the people who are suffering, including many Friends Church members.

EFM is sending financial aid to EFC- Congo immediately to help with urgent needs. We are in contact with Lusungu to learn more about how we can partner with EFC-Congo to provide further aid to both Friends Church members and people in the communities, and EFM will be sending further aid in coming days and weeks. If the Lord leads you to help financially, please see the giving options below.  We were very thankful for the generosity of many of you who helped provide funds to the Congo flood emergency relief funds earlier this year, and we were pleased with the excellent stewardship, sacrificial work, and leadership that EFC-Congo leaders provided. They were able to guide your donations through EFM to not only help with urgent food, clothes and hospitality needs of flood victims, but in the rehab stage of flood recovery, we together were able to help 10 Congolese families in the community who lost their homes to the floods rebuild in a different location!

“Our churches here in Metro Manila and Luzon area have ceased gathering for worship in our worship places for almost two months now. This directly affected 11 churches since the beginning of lockdown. Unfortunately, in the last two weeks our churches in the Visayas have also been ordered to stop gathering for worship. This affected another 7 churches. I am leading worship every Sunday via livestream for all our churches and members. 

The Lord is really good and enabled us to bring His message to wider and more diverse audience through our livestream. I’ve been getting very encouraging response from our weekly audience from both members of churches belonging to PEFIM and others who have just heard the message watching us through Facebook. 

But the fact that we cannot gather together for worship in our local churches meant that Tithes and Offering has effectively ceased for all our 18 churches. That includes our main church here in Pasig since we do not have the means to effect online giving. Needless to say, our Pastors have lost their significant source of income. 

Since the beginning of the lockdown on March 14, PEFIM has provided, in two occasions, Emergency Financial Assistance to the pastors and workers of the first eleven churches that were directly affected. It also enabled us to extend financial assistance to nine stranded students and faculty staff from a Bible School in Samar. 

Our churches, particularly Community of Hope Fellowship, Midtown (Mabuting Katiwala) Friends Church and Philippine Evangelical Friends Church, have provided and are continuing to provide financial and food assistance to our members and the poor and vulnerable in our respective communities. We endeavor to extend God’s love and the gospel of Jesus Christ through our practical service. We are exceedingly grateful to the Lord for His provisions in many ways and through EFM’s continued partnership with us.  

With the funds you have sent us we are able to do a third batch of Emergency Financial Assistance for our pastors and leaders, this time for all 18 of our churches. The beneficiaries will also include a group of 13 laborers from Calbayog, Samar who has been stranded in Manila since the lockdown.

Our good Lord reward you for your generosity and care for our people.”

Lusungu, el Representante Legal de las Iglesias Evangélicas Amigos-Congo, informó que los Amigos en las ciudades cercanas de Mulongwe, Kasenge y Songo también se ven afectados. Lusungu dijo en la tarde del 19:

“Uvira se encuentra en la provincia de Kivu del Sur, en la parte oriental de la República Democrática del Congo, a unos 25 kilómetros de Bujumbura, Burundi. Uvira está formada por tres comunidadess, cada una con un gran río: el río Kalimabenge, el río Mulongwe y el río Kavimbra ; todos se alimentan desde las montañas hasta el lago Tanganica. Uvira reside al lado del lago y hacia las montaña.

Durante la noche del 17 de abril, las fuertes lluvias causaron enormes inundaciones. Seguidamente el viernes 19, hubo lluvias más intensas y las partes de la ciudad donde estos ríos se encuentran con el lago Tanganica, Uvira se convirtió en un lago. Muchas familias han muerto y las casas destruidas. El recuento total se desconoce en este momento debido a las continuas inundaciones.

Desde Kavimbira a Mulongwe, muchas de las personas son desplazadas a la comunidad de Kalundu, algunas se quedan con familias y otras se quedan en escuelas o iglesias.

Hasta este momento, no se ha recibido asistencia de alimentos o agua potable, ni ninguna otra asistencia a las víctimas de la inundación, por parte del gobierno ni de ninguna otra persona. Iglesia Evangélica Amigos-Congo está pidiendo a los miembros de las iglesias de Iglesia Evangélica Amigos -Uvira que reciban a las víctimas de las inundaciones y les ofrezcan apoyo.”

Out of 129 EFC-Congo members who are affected by the flood so far (as of Sunday, April 19):

• 17 families have completely lost their homes.
• 33 families have heavily damaged houses.
• 79 families are hosting other families who lost their homes.
• So far, there are no reports of deaths among EFC-Congo church members.

EFM is sending emergency funds to EFC-Congo in Uvira today, to help in assisting both church members and members of the community that the church is helping. Brad Carpenter and David Thomas are helping EFM monitor the situation with readiness to send more emergency aid later this week and next week as appropriate.

Como podrás imaginar, hemos estado al tanto de las noticias mundiales a diario para ver cómo la propagación de COVID-19 está afectando a los países donde están sirviendo nuestros misioneros de EFM. Esto juntamente con las noticias que estamos recibiendo directamente de nuestros misioneros y líderes nacionales, pinta una imagen de bloqueos prolongados, pérdida de ingresos para millones de personas, hambre generalizada y disturbios sociales. Cuando las iglesias no pueden reunirse para adorar, no se reciben ofrendas, y eso tiene un gran impacto financiero en los pastores.

Los gobiernos están haciendo todo lo posible para ayudar con algunas de las necesidades básicas, pero, según lo que estamos escuchando, esta ayuda no llega muy lejos. Afortunadamente, los Amigos Evangélicos en algunos de estos lugares han visto las necesidades y han tomado medidas para ayudar a los creyentes y no creyentes por igual. EFM ha podido apoyar algunos de sus esfuerzos a través de fondos de emergencia en reserva y también fondos que fueron designados para actividades y programas que ya no pueden llevarse a cabo según lo planeado. Ahora es evidente que nuestros hermanos y hermanas en Cristo podrían necesitar mucha más ayuda de nuestra parte para llegar a familiares, amigos y vecinos.

Puede que tú mismo estés experimentando alguna pérdida de ingresos. Esperamos que no pases hambre. Cualquiera que sea tu situación, oramos que, como tus hermanos y hermanas en Cristo en otros continentes, puedas tu hacer algo para ayudar a quienes te rodean. ¿Y qué pasa con las personas que viven en países como India y Nepal? ¿Estás en condiciones de ayudarlos también?
