We will not soon forget the year 2020! But even in the midst of a worldwide pandemic EFM witnessed the Lord’s faithfulness and saw his mission move forward. Here are some of the highlights so you can rejoice with us!

The Lord protected the lives of the missionaries and national leaders during the pandemic and brought healing to those who became infected with COVID-19. The same is true of the people they work with.

We were able, through our emergency fund, to help meet some of the needs created by the spread of COVID-19. Twelve fields benefited from your generous giving. Most of it was used to buy food and hygiene items.

We were able to build nine homes for vulnerable families who lost their homes last April due to the flood that swept through the city of Uvira, Congo. Aid was also distributed in August to Friends families who were displaced because of civil war within the Congo.

The Brad and Chelsea Carpenter Family, who serves in Rwanda, Africa, was able to return to the U.S. for a time of rest, healing, and deputation. Carpenters welcomed baby Ian to their family before leaving Rwanda.

Maria Giron, the Missions Mobilizer for Hispanic Friends, was able to translate EFM’s monthly prayer letter as well as many of its updates and fundraising materials into Spanish.

EFM’s Christmas Catalog had another big year. Many, many families (both believers and unbelievers) are being blessed by practical gifts and ministries of various kinds are now funded.

We did not suffer loss of income due to the pandemic. Instead we had one of the strongest financial finishes in EFM’s history.

New disciples of Jesus Christ were made and some new churches planted even though physical movement was restricted due to the pandemic.

Many churches reached wider audiences by holding their worship services online and using venues like Facebook.

In May the EFM Board felt led to commit to sending at least 10 new missionary households from North America to launch at least 5 new fields by December 31, 2025. We are calling this the “Five-Year Goal.” A strategic plan was developed and the first steps are being implemented.

A short video was produced to promote the Five-Year Goal and is now in use.

EFM revamped its approach to educating children about Friends missions by creating a new series called “Children’s Missions Focus.” Lessons were prepared and distributed that told the story of the first missionary sent by Evangelical Friends in North America and the fruit of the ministry she started. Her name was Esther Butler and she was sent by Ohio Yearly Meeting (now called Evangelical Friends Church-Eastern Region) to China in 1887.

Further progress was made in incorporating 10 missionary/national worker households and 9 fields into EFM’s systems. Prayer cards are now available for all these households as well as information about their ministries on www.friendsmission.com. These missionaries and national workers were put under the care of EFM by Northwest Yearly Meeting and Evangelical Friends Church-Eastern Region in 2018 and 2019 respectively.

Indiana Yearly Meeting became an associate member of EFM. There are now eight yearly meetings/regions in North America that are collaborating through EFM to reach more of the world for Christ.

Two Field Support Teams (FSTs) were set up, one for Bangladesh and the other for Central Africa. FSTs are groups of five-six people who assist in caring for the missionaries and national workers in those particular fields. We anticipate learning from these two groups (and a similar team we started in 2019 that helps send English teachers to a creative-access country) so that we can set up many more in the months and years to come.

The International Friends Church Multiplication Conference, which EFM supported in various ways, went totally online and took place in November. Well over 500 Friends leaders from around the world participated via Zoom and YouTube. The prayer gatherings were especially powerful. Many of the workshops and messages are being passed on to others in order to spur church multiplication.

We are grateful for the partnership in the gospel that we have with you, and we are looking forward to continuing that partnership in 2021 and beyond!

Bangladesh Newsletter

December 2020

What dreadful days everyone is going through! In January, no one understood what is going to happen in the days and weeks ahead. But, even then, God is good! He is always good! In that time of uncertainty, God gave us a verse:

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10

Let me share some of our joyful work that the Lord has helped to do in the midst of this crisis period.

A Day with Children: It was a joy to spend a day with 52 children on 16 November. It was the first public program of this year. There was lots of fun, including Bible storytelling, skits, learning new songs, and eating together. May the Lord raise this new generation for his kingdom work!

Friends Church Multiplication Conference: We were able to connect globally through Zoom and YouTube and attend the Friends Church Multiplication Conference in November. A small group of people attended with us online and our city leaders and volunteers joined us at the EFC office. Many could not attend this conference because of language problems and not having access to the internet. We have planned to take the materials from the conference and organize them into a training program December 15-17, 2020. We are expecting 23 pastors and leaders will join with us. Pray for the supernatural power of the Holy Spirit.

Discipleship Training: We had our second public training program. 25 lay leaders participated from six Friends churches. Our local team worked very hard organizing this training. Husbands and wives mostly attended. Pray that the Holy Spirit leads them everyday.

Mothers Gave Birth Children: We are so happy that some of our churches have given birth to new churches. Three new churches were born and 67 new believers took a public testimony of baptism. The Lord’s family is growing!

Food Distribution: By the grace of God, we were able to distribute food again to needy people. It was a great blessing to the believers. We are so thankful to those who have shared their love to these people.

Tube-Well Installation: We were able to install five tube-wells after a flood for drinking water. People are now getting fresh water for drinking.

Our school principal and some of the teachers are positive which forced us to close the school and provide teaching online. Christmas programming for the school children and staff is canceled. We pray that we will be able to have regular teaching classes from January 2021 and have yearly examinations on time.

CHILD CARE CENTER IN VILLAGE: Closed since April, but we are keeping in touch with our students by visiting their homes. If the Lord’s willing and government’s restrictions are lifted we will start them soon.

NEW BELIEVER’S FELLOWSHIP: We are meeting in small groups in several villages. Our Pastor, Dhan Singh Dhurway, is planning to have a larger group in one village for a Christmas service. He has asked me to give the Christmas message. We hope that we will be able to have Christmas worship for new believers in one village farmhouse. Remember to pray for it. This fellowship is growing and we thank God for it.

FARM: We had very little rain this year during Monsoon. Our well had no water and the previous well was also dry. We were forced to try another for another. Thank God that after a couple of trials we found good and plenty of water. This well will be able to provide water to our neighbors in the village and also for our need.

BIBLE STUDY: During COVID, I wrote a Bible study on the “Family of Bethany” in Hindi basing on Luke 10:38-42 and John chapter 11:12-19. These are more than 100 pages. I am proofing it by a couple of good writers. It is almost ready to go to press. I need money to get 1000 copies printed. Please pray and help me in this work. I am sure it will be helpful book for the pastors and Bible school students. Please pray about it and help me in this project.

FAMILY: I am sorry to say that my younger brother who was a retired police officer died on November 26th. He left behind two daughters and one son and their families. Suzana is doing better. Our daughter Arpana Massey lives with us and is taking more responsibilities of our ministry. She is a trained teacher and is a widow with two children. Her son, Abhishay, is studying at the School of Evangelism in Greenville, NC and her daughter is doing pre-graduation studies here and lives with us. I am sure she will be in touch with you more. Our elder son, Arun, and his wife, Shobha, are ministering in state of Karnataka. They keep in touch with us and help us in our needs. Our younger son, Amit, and his family are in Dallas where he has a Tennis Academy. They are also doing well and keep in touch with us.

By the grace of God, I am doing well. The Lord has given me good health but after preaching for thirty minutes I have cramps which cause unbearable pain for short time. I also get tired easily, but the Lord is good to me and gives me daily strength.

THANKS: I want to thank you for your prayers and kind support. We do appreciate your greetings and emails and your comments on Facebook and Messenger. Those are encouraging us. Your support is helpful to us in the ministry.

Yours in his grace,

Rev. Dr. Gabriel and Suzana Massey

Desarrollo Comunitario De Por Vida

The Kibbe Family | Serving in Thailand

Ministry Introduction

The Way Foundation was founded in 2016 by Ben Kibbe as an extension of the Evangelical Friends ministry in Thailand. Ben and Charity were first sent to Thailand by Damascus Friends Church in 2012 to join an already thriving team started by Ben’s parents, David and Marilyn Kibbe, and their national partners.

After spending almost four years in language and culture studies it was time to formalize the organization and register with the Thai government. Since that time the Lord’s fav

or has been with The Way Foundation both in their relationship with communities and their standing as a Christian organization with the Thai government.

Bible Teaching

Since 2011 David and his Lahu partner, Charlee, have been developing and teaching Bible curriculum to men and women who want to have a deeper understanding of God’s word and who want to teach others. Pastors, Evangelists, and disciple makers have studied four days a month for two years in order to grow in their relationship with the Lord and be better equipped to study, teach, and most importantly apply God’s truth to their daily lives. There are currently 35 students. Charlee is also starting with two new groups in two places, both about four hours from Chiang Rai.

There are currently three groups representing a number of villages, meeting in three different locations in northern Thailand. Approximately 40 students are attending these monthly sessions. Charlee is training five men to help him in the teaching.

Church Planting

The Way Church is located in the city of Chiang Rai and has two main purposes. The first is to reach people (both Thai and Lahu speakers) in the city who don’t have a church. The second is to be both a model church and a missional church. The leaders of the church have a vision for training and supporting teams who will go out into the mountain communities and make disciples and plant churches. Pastor Solomon and the team have planted a second church in the village of Ja Saw Pa and are currently working in two additional communities.

Whole-Life Community Development

We believe that The Way to sustainable development is through looking at the whole life of a person and the whole community in which they live. Jesus did not separate the physical and spiritual needs of people. He also did not just address them as individuals, but also as a larger community. Every person in the world feels the effects of the fall in four broken relationships: the relationship between us and God, us and our neighbors, us and the environment, and us and ourselves.

Over the last three years our team has been working with D4D (Discipling for Development) and the Navigators. Our team has learned the theology of development and the results of dependency models and how oftentimes good intentions lead to an unhealthy relationship between outsiders and the communities in need of development. We have grown a lot as a team and started to take a different approach to the communities that we are connected to.

Farm Development

The Way Farm, directed by YawSaPa, is an educational farm used to learn better farming techniques and new cash crops that can be used by nationals in ministry to supplement their income and do more sustainable ministry as bi-vocational pastors and evangelists.

Please Pray…

For wisdom for each leader. We want to hear from the Lord, especially on how we prioritize our time and energy.

For additional funding. We strive to be good stewards with the resources that God has given us. Right now, we especially need additional funding for training scholarships for volunteers.

For the Kibbe family as we look at a potential 2021-22 trip to the US. Travel is still very uncertain, especially when considering a timeline of returning to Thailand at the end of one year.

Diciembre de 2020

Queridas Amigas,

In Matthew 9:37-38, Jesus said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”

When Jesus said, “the harvest is plentiful,” he wasn’t kidding! David Thomas found the infographic below that gives us one way of seeing how huge the harvest is today. It also shows us where most of the people groups who have not heard the Gospel are located. Please take a moment to ponder what this infographic tells you.

Frontier People Groups (FPGs) are Unreached People Groups with 0.1% or fewer Christians of any kind, and no evidence of a self-sustaining gospel movement. According to the Joshua Project there are currently about 5,047 Frontier People Groups with a total population of 1,941,674,000. One fourth of the world lives in FPGs and these people have almost no chance of hearing about Jesus unless workers come from the outside to share the Gospel with them.

Jesus continues to say, “Ask the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest.” EFM believes that he wants Evangelical Friends of North America to send out at least ten new missionary households to launch at least five new fields over the next five years. Will you pray with us that that will come to pass? If so, please send us a message at this link to let us know you are praying about this specific need. And be on the lookout for updates in this monthly prayer letter about the progress being made on this five-year goal.

Thank you for praying!
