Evan and I met online last May and we have been dating long distance since then. Evan is from Indonesia and has been living in the States for the past several years. He is currently living in Virginia where he works in campus ministry with international students. It was really wonderful to have him come out to Cambodia for Christmas and to meet my community here, and we also had the opportunity to visit his family in Indonesia. We are really looking forward to spending more time together in person to give us space to discern our next steps!

It was so much fun to have Evan stay with the Swards during his visit to Stung Treng. We really enjoyed time together!

I’m extremely thankful to EFM for granting me this sabbatical. It’s a tremendous gift to feel supported not only in ministry but also in the more personal ways that God is leading me in this season. Part of my sabbatical will be time with Evan in Southern California with my family and around Granada (my home church), and part of my sabbatical will be in Virginia, visiting Evan and getting to know his community there. We are really looking forward to this time together!

We’d appreciate your prayers over this next season as we spend time together and discern our next steps. Please pray that we would continue to hear God’s voice and be sensitive to his leading. Thank you so much for praying with us!

We would like you to share with you our joy and gratitude to God for the beautiful opportunity he gave my husband and I to be part of the team to go on the EFM Luke 10 Vision Trip to Bolivia in January. We invite you to praise God because we were able to see how he is working in such a special way with our Friends brothers and sisters in Bolivia. It was truly a trip that exceeded our expectations. Praise the Lord!

La Paz
On Tuesday, January 11, after traveling about 24 hours, amid a pandemic that presents many challenges when travel internationally, and boarding four planes, we arrived in the city of La Paz, Bolivia in South America. This beautiful city is in the valleys of the Andes with an altitude of more than 13,000 feet (4,000 meters) above sea level and an estimated population of four million. One of the wonders of God that can be seen when visiting Bolivia is Lake Titicaca, considered the highest lake in the world. We were fascinated by the beautiful view of the lake and the panorama of the city of La Paz. God’s creation is truly awesome!

INELA
It was a privilege to be participating for the first time in the sessions of the Bolivian Yearly Meeting named INELA (for its acronym in Spanish) which means the National Evangelical Friends Church. This was a four-day event where around 400 Friends pastors and church leaders from all over the country gathered. INELA recently celebrated their 100th anniversary. We were impressed to hear that about 300 churches were reported to be part of this Yearly Meeting, that’s about 6,000 Friends members! It is important to mention that the main theme for this year’s meeting was “Walking the Mission Path” based on the verse of Romans 10:15. Our team was touched by the emphasis on the theme of missions, from the sermons, the guests, the songs, and even the decoration.

Our Team
Friends USA team was formed by Daniel Cammack- EFM Field Director, Ken Comfort (who was a missionary kid in Bolivia and later Ken and his family served many years in Peru), David Thomas (who grew up in Bolivia as the son of missionaries as well and served as a missionary in Africa for nearly two decades), Roy Lujan (Northwest Friends Yearly Meeting representative), and my husband and I. We are truly grateful to God, that he permitted us have teamed up with these giants of faith, who have left important footprints in his kingdom.

The main purpose of our visit to INELA as a team from the United States was to encourage and stimulate the Bolivian Friends Church towards a more focused global vision. It is awe-inspiring how God has moved through the Friends Church to reach people in Bolivia with the Gospel with churches already planted all over the country. But now, national leaders are feeling a strong impulse to move the Bolivian Friends churches out of their Samaria to go to the ends of the earth to proclaim Jesus Christ to other nations. We are moved to see how the Lord of the harvest is challenging the Friends of Bolivia to go out into the fields. Praise him!

EFM, in the process toward our goal of sending ten new missionary households to start at least five new mission fields, is already eyeing 11 places around the world to conduct exploration trips called Luke 10 Exploratory Trips. One of these 11 places is the jungle between Ecuador and Peru where an unreached ethnic group called the Shuar is centered. One of the purposes of our team, taking advantage of the feeling that INELA now has about doing global missions, was to invite this strong Yearly Meeting to partner with EFM to go explore together and perhaps later form a team to reach unreached ethnic groups, such as in the case of the Shuar people.

Our Participation
We give glory to God! We were touched to see the receptive hearts and the interest that could be felt every time we had the opportunity to share about missions in workshops, sermons, question and answer panels, and in talks with leaders during meals or free time. It was a very beautiful thing to see the sensitivity of the people to the touch of the Holy Spirit, after preaching, going in front to kneel at the altar to surrender at the feet of Jesus in response to his call to be obedient to the Great Commission.

It was exciting to see that INELA is open, and they are asking for mentorship from those with more experience, in this case from EFM, to know how to raise missionaries, how to raise funds, how to send, learn to have holistic care for their workers, etc. They are eager to know how!

After the Yearly Meeting sessions, an invitation was extended to all the attendees to a planned mission’s seminar, for which less than 10 people had signed up the day before. We were shocked when we saw that there were many people very interested in learning more about the topic of missions, and so at the end, there were approximately 70 people who were present at this seminar where my husband and I had time to share our experience in the mission field and talk about Mexico Yearly Meeting’s VM32 project.

Our Deep Gratitude
We are deeply grateful that God allowed us to have this wonderful experience, to be able to make new relationships and friendships among his people in Bolivia, to be able to talk about what we are passionate about, touch the beautiful Bolivian culture, taste and experience new delicious foods, feel his love for us through the hospitality and generosity of the two families who hosted us in their homes and all the people with whom we were able to connect who showed so much affection towards us, like taking the time to cross the city in terrible traffic just to get to the airport to say goodbye. So overwhelming, all that God allowed us to experience and achieve during this trip!

Finally, thanks to each one of you for being part of our team with your prayers, your support and your demonstrations of love making us feel that God embraces us through you.

EFM Missions Mobilizer for Hispanic Friends

We are happy to share updates from our ministry.

Four churches were planted in the past two months in Bangladesh. One was planted by a disciple of ours, Mafuza, with 15 families. Another one was planted by a disciple of Mafuza’s, Rasheda, with five families. Two more churches were planted by our disciple Henry. Henry has two disciples, Mohadeb and Joydip who each planted a church-one with seven families and the other with six families.

All the families have taken a public testimony of baptism. Please be praying for all of them as they face persecution. We are more and more seeing this kind of fruit in the movement that is beyond our direct work or control, and we consider it our reward, as heaven rejoices! The church here is “movement motivated” and we are excited. Please see below some photos of our recent church members and public testimonies of baptism.

One of the best things I did last week, was join an ecumenical group of lay leaders from churches in Greystones to lead a time of contemplative prayer. It has been such a joy to meet with these ladies each evening and hear from each of their hearts. We are led by a common group of readings that all churches participating in Unity Week all over the world were also reading. The gravity and weight of that global participation were evident each night. It has been an incredible experience for me to learn from these women and lay leaders in the beginning of my time here in Ireland.

Before we began the readings and reflections each night, we were led through some relaxation exercises that asked us to breathe deeply, to release tension in our physical bodies, and to listen to the still small voice of God. Most nights, it was the first time that I had been still and quiet all day, particularly in these weird initial moments of figuring out my role here in Ireland. The act of calming ourselves together was also weighty. It reminded me of Elijah crying out to God in 1 Kings while he is running for his life from Jezebel.

Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind, there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake.  After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.

1 Kings 19: 10-12

Elijah was crying out to God for a path forward, but God was not in the big events like we think he’ll be. His voice was in the gentle whisper which Elijah had to still himself to hear properly. Stillness can be powerful and powerfully used by God to instruct us, to calm us, and to inspire us to worship. As I journey forward in my ministry here in Ireland, I am reminded to find moments of stillness, to use newly learned resources like the Daily Examen and Centering Prayer to find those moments. I am so grateful for the gifts of God during my first few months on field. Thank you to you friends and family that have been praying and thinking about me for years.

It’s fascinating, impressive that an incredible interview happens with no prep, and it’s really funny.

Hamilton: The Revolution: Lin Manual  Miranda and Jeremy McCarter- I forgot this was on my Amazon wish list and it showed up in my very late Christmas package from my sister-in-law (not her fault, the Irish postal system’s fault). This is both a historical account of Hamilton in real life and the making of Hamilton the musical. It feeds my trivia loving, behind the scenes part of my brain. I am savoring it page by page and trying not to re-watch Hamilton every single time I read a single page of this.

All Creatures Great and Small, James Harriot: I watched this lovely, feel good show on PBS and loved to see that it was free in the Kindle library a few weeks ago. The story of a young vet that practices in the Yorkshire Dales in the early 20th century.

I’m Listening To…

RTE Doc on One: This podcast is made by RTE, the public television station of Ireland. I have listened to episodes ranging from a family that kept one of Santa’s reindeer during the pandemic to discriminatory profiling of Romany Gypsy families in Ireland and greater Europe. It’s really well done and informative.

Films to Be Buried With: This is hosted by Brett Goldstein, writer, producer and actor most well known for Ted Lasso (which you should also watch). This podcast asks questions of its guests like “which film made you laugh the most and which film did you love in the past but doesn’t hold up now?” It’s a fun way to interview someone and has only served to increase my “to watch” list.

Praises:

• The success of our Ecumenical Contemplative Prayer Meeting last week. We are very encouraged by the participation of all five of our churches and we are moving forward with excitement to continue doing things together.
• Virtually all of the COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted in Ireland which means we are starting up things like home groups and on site play groups this week and next. It’s exciting to have people in the building again and more freedom to meet.
• My youngest nephew, Ethan, is recovered from COVID-19 and did not get any of our family members sick.

Requests:

• Continue praying for my patience as I wait to be interviewed for a PPS number which will allow me to get a booster shot among other things.
• For my church and our staff at Greystones Nazarene Community Church, here in Ireland as we move forward with plans in light of restrictions being lifted. Pray for safety of all that we have meeting in our building. Please pray for the beginning stages of a big renovation plan. We are excited for these plans but hold them lightly so that they may be exactly what God needs them to be.
• Please pray for my own life rhythms. Pray that I would be gracious and patient with myself as I am only beginning to find these out in my new context. Pray for my own health and safety as I pursue these rhythms.

Philippine Evangelical Friends Church (PEFC) celebrated Christmas by remembering the greatest gift humanity ever received in the person of our Lord Jesus Christ! He is the real reason for every celebration of Christmas. It is also through the example of Jesus when he gave his life as ransom for the forgiveness of sins of those who believe that PEFC extends a generous attitude toward its members and the community at large.

We praise God for the generosity of our members who faithfully bring their gifts, tithes, and offerings to the church to meet its every need and be able to respond to the need of others as well. As the church celebrates Christmas we were able to bless our church community and others with significant gifts that provided food on their tables on Christmas Eve!

In all these, we give God the praises and glory for his faithfulness to his people. We continue to lift our church family to the Lord for his protection, continued favor and provision in 2022!

Praise God for the successful launching of Taytay Evangelical Friends Church (TEFC) located in West Bank, Floodway, Taytay, Rizal. We are exceedingly grateful to the Lord for his faithfulness and grace that he established his church in the challenged area of Taytay. He raised faithful leaders who passionately share the gospel and extend the love of Christ in their community through preaching the holy scriptures and in many practical and tangible ways.

In partnership with faithful Friends and partners in the ministry TEFC was able to give Christmas gift in the form of grocery items to poor families in the community. A delightful fellowship over sumptuous meal followed the worship celebration. Children were given gifts and meals the previous day (Saturday) during their Christmas celebration.

Jesus himself taught his disciples that whatever they do to people in need around them, they do to him as well. Looking after the welfare of the church and its surrounding community is part of the mission of “discipling nations” that Christ himself instructed his disciples.

Please continue to pray for this newly established church that it will effectively proclaim God’s glory in Jesus Christ. Pray for God’s wisdom and guidance as the leadership composed of relatively young elders. They may be young in age but certainly mature in faith. Thank you for the presence of Pastor Memma Necesito Abella and Marie Anb Ezeonyilimba who represented PEFIM BOE. We appreciated your presence very much!

Queridos amigos,

When I was staying with Kathi during my 2019 trip to Ireland, I often found myself anxious about what to do next, what would happen if I did that thing, what would happen if that thing didn’t lead to the next thing that I wanted to happen, and the anxious questions spiraled from there. Kathi reminded me that we can only do the next step, we cannot worry about the ten steps after. She reminded me that God would worry about those and we should not try to plan better than God. I am happy to tell you that the next step is here!

Ireland has begun accepting visa applications again! In January, Dan, Kathi, and I met with the leadership of my sponsoring church to discuss the application process and how we will work together. I have already begun organizing and compiling the documents needed for this application. The timeline of the application process is unknown. After I submit the application, Irish immigration promises a response in 4-6 weeks however that was before the global pandemic and lockdown of several key agencies for immigration. Please pray with me for the specific immigration officer whose desk my application lands on, for myself and my team as we gather documents, for my sponsor church as we reach an agreement for my role in their ministry when I arrive in Ireland, for my own sense of readiness and worthiness for this next step and my family and I as we prepare for something that we have been expecting to do for a very long time.

During application preparation, I will be engaging in The Plan Chapter 2 which includes remaining at Gateway Friends to continue to learn from this congregation about leadership and cross-cultural immersion, to finish my studies in May at Barclay College with a graduate degree in Pastoral Studies, to conduct research to complete that degree, to engage and care for my support base intentionally, to push myself outside of my Christian bubble, and to continue counseling. I am excited to take these next steps with the support of my entire team, which has grown by a whole congregation at Gateway Friends now!

I would love the chance to meet with each of you and share what I have learned in the waiting. I know that meeting in person is difficult now, but I would be happy to connect through email, phone or video, and I will be contacting you in the weeks ahead. I look forward to hearing from you about what God has been showing you during these unprecedented times.

I am filled with profound gratitude for the intentional and consistent ways I have been encouraged, supported, prayed for, and loved during this very unique journey towards full-time ministry in Ireland. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

The Retnaraj Family | Serving in Nepal  “In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and His kingdom, I give you this charge: Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season.” 2 Timothy 4:1-2

The Musahars are a Dalit group found in the Terai of Nepal. They speak the Bhojpuri dialect of Hindi and Nepali. They were traditionally rat-catchers, and there is still uncertainty as to their exact origin. The word Musahar is said to be derived from “mūs,” a local Bhojpuri and Sanskrit (mūṣ) word for a rat or mouse, on account of their traditional occupation as rat-catchers. They no longer engage in rat-catching and are now mainly landless agricultural laborers. They are one of the most marginalized groups in Nepal & India and have suffered discrimination. They believe in a number of tribal deities, and a small percentage of these people have accepted Christ.

In the rural areas, Musahar are primarily bonded agricultural workers, but often go without work for as much as eight months in a year. Children work alongside their parents in the fields or as rag pickers, earning as little as IRs 25 to 30 ($ 0.20 to 0.30) daily. The Musahar literacy rate is 3% but falls below 1% among women. By some estimates, as many as 85% of some villages of Musahars suffer from malnutrition and with scant access to health centers, diseases such as malaria and kala-azar, the most severe form of leishmaniasis, are prevalent.

Our CHE ministry is involved in a Health & Nutrition Program among some Musahar children and women, and through this program we also provide school tuition to school drop-out Musahar children through a Community Learning Centre (CLC). We have about 25 children in Aurahi village, which is approximately 12 kms from Janakpur in the Dhanusa District. Arun Mandal and his wife, Babli, are CHE Trainers who are actively involved in teaching children from a Childrens’ CHE syllabus. It has lessons in health and hygiene and incorporates simple a Bible Study using Bible stories. Other CHE leaders like Sanjeev & Kiran and also Sahendra Mahto are actively working among this people group with our ministry in Mahottari and Dhanusa Districts.

Prateek was able to get back to college in the U.S. after a brief time with us and the rest of our family in India without any additional problems caused due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Thank you for praying for his safe journey.

This year, as we were preparing and readying our house, we learned that one of the larger local Hindu festivals happened to be on the same day! This hasn’t happened before, and we weren’t sure how this would affect who all would come to our party. We began to get discouraged because we knew that most of the people who usually came would be busy tending to the details that accompanied their festival. So, battling discouragement yet filled with hope, knowing that God wasn’t stressed and would bring all that were supposed to come, we finished the last bit of preparations before the knocking on the door started. (Although, honestly, the knocking started before we were fully prepared!)

We opened the doors and began the party at 3:00 (some of our kids were still napping) with about seven kids on our porch. As we welcomed them in and let the party begin, our prayer was that God would use this day and our family to be a light even on a day that was set apart for the worship of their gods. And it was just that! Our home filled up with kids, about 20 total and about eight adults. We played games with the kids, passed out candy for prizes, and told the story of Jesus’ birth (using our mouths and multimedia!). It was the first time some of them had ever heard the story before.

Then, food, lots of food. And after everyone had their fill of American sweets and savories, at about 7:30, parents were calling to collect their kids to have them present for their festival. And as they all left, we gave them each a gift bag to share a bit more joy with them. There were goodies in the bags to enjoy, but we also enclosed John 3:16-17 in both Hindi and English. We trust God to use our lives and his written Word to continue to soften their hearts. And we are thankful that even when the joyful events can be stressful to us, they are not to God. He already knows what is going to happen and has gone before us, beside us, and behind us! He is so good. Thank you for continuing to join us in praying that they will accept Jesus soon!

• The Lord blessed our Christmas party, and we were able to share the Christmas story with many children.
• Our kids continue to thrive and enjoy their lives and family in India.
• We are so thankful for the friends we have and that we continue to have meaningful conversations and deep relationships.

• Our village is in the midst of a spiritually dark period while they allow their village god to meditate. No one is allowed to listen to music, watch TV, make loud noises, or work the ground. At the end of this 45 day period (which is towards the end of February), the priests will prophesy about upcoming events over the next year.
• That we could really communicate well with those around us, especially spiritual matters that tend to have a much harder and more specific vocabulary.
• That we would find favor with the government in the last steps of our business process.

Jinky and I thank each of you as well for your prayers and partnership in the work of the Lord. Your place in the Service of the Lord is both needed and greatly appreciated as we lift up the name of Christ.

As we are now full swing into the New Year we have much to report.

First, 2018 ended with us and EFM in the Black financially. God has moved mightily to provide all the needs for His work. Purihin Ang Panginoon! Praise the Lord in Tagalog.

Our current outreach to Purok Uno has continued to move ahead as new doors are being opened. Recently we were taking the children on a walk as part of an English lesson through the neighborhood. The Housing Association where most of our children live had just held elections for new officers. They were meeting outside when we walked by and they stopped us to ask how things were going. This meeting was not by chance, but the results of our prayers asking God to bring us into contact with the Gate Keepers of the Community. We got to meet the new Imam and the new officers. They were very excited about our work. They also know we are from Silangan Evangelical Friends Church and it didn’t seem to bother them at all. In fact, we had a very good discussion with the Imam and it appears we will have further talks about Faith.

We are getting ready to have our first ESL graduation and the Housing Association has offered their meeting hall for this event. So, on March 23rd we will see our students receive their first-year certificates which will indicate their individual level of fluency. This will be a community event and we will invite but Ptr Manny and the Imam to pray for the students. Pray this will continue to open the door of revelation about the truth of God in Jesus Christ.

Our FEAST residential students are also finishing their first year and are doing very well, although sometimes it is information overload. They like the faculty are looking forward to the summer break. Our Distance Learning student are also doing well. This group are all Pastors. All six are in varying levels of the Recording of their Ordinations. We expect to see four of them complete this process by Feb. 2020.

FEAST will also host training events each year for our Pastors in Samar, Palawan and eventually Capiz (a new Church Plant). These intensive sessions will last 7 days and will cover areas of training that the Area Leaders need and desire. Mostly these will cover practical courses in Preaching and Teaching, Pastoral Ministry, Counseling, Theology, Church Administration, etc…. We will hold our first sessions in Samar in June and Palawan in Early August or early Fall.

We are headed to Palawan on March 29th where Ptr Cris (PEFIM National Director) and I will visit a new possible church plant. Tabon Evangelical Friends Church wants to sponsor a plant in Tagnipay about an hour ride south of Tabon. There are about 5 families that belonged to a church that was abandoned 2 years ago. Ptr Pedro the Senior Pastor at Tabon has an Uncle who has been visiting them during this time. They have recently asked for help to become a Friends Church. What is also very good is that it is a mixed Christian and Muslim community. We are going to be there to meet and pray with these families. Please pray that we will see through God’s eyes and have His wisdom and will for us in ministry to the Tagnipay community. One other good piece of news for this community is that a Nipa Hut Church building already exists, although needing some repairs.

We have been blessed by the response for the EFM Christmas Program on behalf of our projects. All three projects: Dental Kit, Hygiene Kits and Bible Craft Kits were fully funded, plus some extra.

On some personal notes. Jinky and I will take some vacation in Australia in May. We are looking forward to some downtime in the land Down Under. In August we will be in the USA to attend our son and daughter in law’s formal wedding celebration- Christopher and Nathalyd.

Please continue to pray for us in the above ministries and travel. Pray especially for God’s protection for Roy and Ptr Cris as they travel.
