<p>When we last wrote you, God had miraculously led our family through a maze of medical mysteries, and we had emerged in one piece at the other end J. By the beginning of March, my own health felt so completely restored that I began to once again engage in activities I had laid aside for the previous four months. My energy has been good, my strength is returning, and my activity levels are resuming. Zachary and Samuel have thrived in their school settings, and we are catching up with family, friends, and supporters.</p>
<p><a href="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sward-Cambodia-May-2025-Deputation-Church-Sharing.png"><img decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-28161 alignleft" src="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sward-Cambodia-May-2025-Deputation-Church-Sharing-300x168.png" alt="" width="300" height="168" srcset="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sward-Cambodia-May-2025-Deputation-Church-Sharing-300x168.png 300w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sward-Cambodia-May-2025-Deputation-Church-Sharing-1024x574.png 1024w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sward-Cambodia-May-2025-Deputation-Church-Sharing-768x430.png 768w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sward-Cambodia-May-2025-Deputation-Church-Sharing-18x10.png 18w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sward-Cambodia-May-2025-Deputation-Church-Sharing-900x500.png 900w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sward-Cambodia-May-2025-Deputation-Church-Sharing-600x336.png 600w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sward-Cambodia-May-2025-Deputation-Church-Sharing.png 1430w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a>March and April were full of visits to church communities and sharing about God’s work in Cambodia.</p>
<p>One particular highlight in April occurred on a Sunday morning visit to Gateway Friends Church. We anticipated seeing our old teammate, Elise Lature (née Paty), and her husband Evan, who are now on staff there. Imagine our shock to be visiting Evan and Elise in the church parking lot, and look up to see our really old teammates (not in age! But in length of time serving in Cambodia together J), Fede and Diane Hernandez, with two of their kids!! They were in the area and decided to worship at Gateway that Sunday. What a joy and special gift to have an impromptu team reunion with our old friends!</p>

<p>Despite feeling great, I had one more doctor appointment at the very end of April with a vascular surgeon. Due to ongoing ‘too-high’ blood pressure, he has ordered another MRI. I have a nuclear medicine test next week to evaluate the actual function of my right kidney. He wants to look at these two results and decide on the next steps.</p>
<ol>
<li>Please pray that I am able to get an MRI scheduled ASAP.</li>
<li>Please pray that the results of these two tests show that my kidney is either 1) <strong>fully </strong>restored or 2) <strong>fully </strong>dead. It is possible that my not-totally-dead kidney is triggering my high blood pressure. This is not good for my body in the long term. So, we need it to make a decision.</li>
</ol>
<p><a href="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sward-Cambodia-May-2025-Deputation-Visit-with-Friends.png"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-28163 alignleft" src="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sward-Cambodia-May-2025-Deputation-Visit-with-Friends-300x225.png" alt="" width="300" height="225" srcset="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sward-Cambodia-May-2025-Deputation-Visit-with-Friends-300x225.png 300w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sward-Cambodia-May-2025-Deputation-Visit-with-Friends-1024x768.png 1024w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sward-Cambodia-May-2025-Deputation-Visit-with-Friends-768x576.png 768w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sward-Cambodia-May-2025-Deputation-Visit-with-Friends-16x12.png 16w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sward-Cambodia-May-2025-Deputation-Visit-with-Friends-600x450.png 600w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Sward-Cambodia-May-2025-Deputation-Visit-with-Friends.png 1430w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a>Please pray with us for spiritual protection, which encompasses bodies, minds, and hearts. Our small missionary community in Stung Treng has experienced one trial after another in the last two to three years. Please pray that Jesus will be victorious in Stung Treng, and that his Church will remain strong in the face of so many challenges. Please pray with us for our boys as we go home. They will face many changes in their community upon their return, and this brings additional emotions to process.</p>
<p>You know we could not, we would not, be here without you. Thank you for your incredible generosity to keep us financially supported on the field, thank you for your encouragement to lift up our hearts, and for your ongoing faithfulness in prayer for us to keep us protected in Jesus. We are so grateful for you!!</p>
<p>Much love,</p>

Scott and I are rejoicing in these days that the Lord has made for us, and the plans He has for us. They have not always been our plans (!), but they have always turned out more than we could have asked for or imagined.</p>
<p>Our plan for home assignment this year was to return in May of 2025, well-prepared and equipped for 3-4 months of traveling, sharing about ministry in Cambodia, and preaching. Instead, we find ourselves on the ground and taking a running jump into what we know will be an exciting home assignment. God has demonstrated his faithfulness so clearly to us over the past three months that we have no doubt he has something big in store for as we begin these next three months of visiting YOU!</p>
<p>We are completing a 2.5-year term which has seen the birth of a Bible training school in our home province. The Stung Treng Bible School was started at the beginning of this term as a partnership between three different mission organizations, reaching out to every believer in our province, regardless of denomination. We hoped for 20 students in January 2023, and this past December, 45 graduated- having faithfully shown up each month for two years! This endeavor was one of our greatest joys to witness. We’ve also had the opportunity to begin relationship-building into a Muslim, ethnic minority group who we have prayed over for many years. Our work with these tribal people has continued and is bearing fruit as early believers are establishing CHRIST-FOLLOWING families with new, God-honoring traditions. We are excited for the chance to share with you about what God has been doing in our little corner of Cambodia. What a blessing to see God’s Church growing in Stung Treng!!</p>
<p>Over the next 3.5 months, we will be visiting eleven churches on Sunday mornings, with more mid-week visits planned to other church families. We are so grateful for our network of Friends churches, and the 15.5 years you have partnered with us, blessing us with your prayers and financial support.</p>
<p>Our biggest regret when we are Stateside is not having enough time to meet with all of you BUT WE’D STILL LIKE TO TRY!! If you&#8217;d like to connect while we&#8217;re here, please email us at <strong><a href="mailto:andreas@friendsmission.com">andreas@friendsmission.com</a></strong> AND we will try to find a time to catch up.</p>
<p>One way you can stay abreast with what we are up to and KNOW how to pray for us, is by becoming one of our prayer partners. We know that so many of you already pray for us faithfully, and we cannot thank you enough. Because we believe in the power of prayer, we would love to actively increase the amount of intentional prayer support behind our us and our ministry. If you or anyone you know would like to pray for our ministry, please<strong><a href="https://friendsmission.com/en/sward/"> fill out this form</a></strong>.</p>
<p>We are so grateful for each of you, and hopeful to see many of you while we are here!</p>
<p>Rejoicing in this day He has given,</p>

In November 2023, EFM made a commitment to launching 6 of the 9 fields which were still under exploration. Those six fields are now moving on to pre-launch phases. Meanwhile, we are currently still sending Luke 10 Exploration Teams to consider three other potential fields: The Balkans (Eastern Europe), Tanzania, and an unreached people group in SE Asia. EFM&#8217;s discernment is based on EFM&#8217;s CAN GO criteria. See more information <strong><a href="https://friendsmission.com/en/luke-10-trips/">here</a></strong>.</p>

The team members include Eddy Vera (FSW), Freddy Rivas (FSW), Scott and Andrea Sward (EFM Missionaries), and local leaders within the Cambodia mission.</p>
<p>Team leader Eddy Vera shared this about the trip: our purpose is to explore whether our current mission is ready to start a new mission to an unreached people group who are in Cambodia and other nearby security-sensitive countries or to discern what steps are needed to be prepared in the future to meet EFM&#8217;s CAN GO Criteria.</p>
<p>The following are ways that you can pray for this team while they are in Cambodia.</p>
<ul>
<li>Pray for traveling mercies for the team.</li>
<li>Pray for healthy conversations to take place.</li>
<li>Pray for discernment.</li>
<li>Pray for the work that is currently being done in Cambodia.</li>
</ul>
<p>The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to cast out more workers into his fields.</p>

<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-26957 alignright" src="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Sward-Cambodia-August-2024-Family-Visit-300x226.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="226" srcset="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Sward-Cambodia-August-2024-Family-Visit-300x226.jpg 300w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Sward-Cambodia-August-2024-Family-Visit-16x12.jpg 16w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Sward-Cambodia-August-2024-Family-Visit.jpg 468w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" />Autumn is quickly coming upon us!  Our family had a full, productive, and FUN summer. After a brief, two-week summer holiday in June, the boys started their next school year. We are hoping to leave for our deputation a little earlier than usual next year and thus miss some of the hot season here <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/16.0.1/72x72/263a.png" alt="☺" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />.  Zachary has started 7th grade, and Samuel is in 4th grade. Scott has had many teaching responsibilities and some traveling teaching roles as well. A few weeks ago, one of my sisters and her oldest daughter came to visit us for a week.  That was definitely the highlight of the summer and such a refresher as we gear up for this next season!!</p>
<p>A few months ago, I shared with you in pictures what it looks like when we say that “Scott was going to the village”. Many of the expressions we use to describe our ministry assume that you can imagine what we are referring to. When we have visitors, I am reminded that pictures are worth a thousand words – they create a much stronger link between <em>your</em> imagination and <em>our </em>words. Scott usually devotes more time during rainy season to preparing lessons. What does this mean? Well, come along, and I’ll show you!</p>
<p>During the week, Scott tries to wake up early for personal study and prayer. By 7:30, he is in his office, ready to work. (A few days of the week, he has YWAM staff meetings, or breakfast meetings, or travels to some village or another – but on the days he is home, this is what his day looks like J)</p>
<p><em>Where it all begins – the coffee pot at our kitchen window and a brilliant sunrise </em><em>over our landlord’s garden.</em></p>

<p><em>Scott’s small, crowded office (I stay out of it, or I would go crazy </em><em><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/16.0.1/72x72/263a.png" alt="☺" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></em><em> ), where all the writing happens! Behind him are two floor-to-ceiling bookcases of books, and stacked all around the office floor are more piles of books!</em></p>

<p>One of the ministries that Scott has poured himself into is developing resources in the Khmer language. As a teacher, he has utilized this gift by developing materials in the Khmer language that he can make available to other Christians for free. (There are more and more existing books being translated from English into Khmer, but very often, these don’t address some of the key cultural views that shape a person’s heart). In the past number of years, he has written <em>Lord of Heaven and Earth</em> (25 evangelization/discipleship lessons), <em>Wisdom is the Best Medicine</em> (health lessons), <em>Rooted in God’s Word</em> (52 lessons for house-church leaders), and</p>
<p><em>Preparing for Marriage in Jesus Christ</em> (pre-marital lessons). He is currently working on a book for Christians regarding finances and another on Bible study methods. These books are available on a Christian resource website, where people can access and download them for free. It is encouraging to hear of people around the country using these books and seeing fruit from the lessons in people’s lives.</p>

<p><em> </em>In addition to writing materials, Scott does a lot of in-person teaching, for which he spends many hours preparing – in the above-mentioned office! He is currently teaching a group of elders once a month on topics related to church leadership and discipline, once a month in our provincial short-course Bible school, and in various other weekly Bible studies in different villages. On the days Scott works in his office, we all have lunch together at noon and take a short break after lunch. Then I go back to finish school with the boys, and Scott continues to work – either in the office or out at an afternoon Bible study.</p>

<p>The young tribal man had quietly listened to the Bible lesson, and the discussion that followed, but he couldn’t contain himself any longer. He was desperate and confused.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-26419 alignleft" src="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Sward-Cambodia-May-2024-3-300x225.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="225" srcset="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Sward-Cambodia-May-2024-3-300x225.jpg 300w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Sward-Cambodia-May-2024-3-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Sward-Cambodia-May-2024-3-768x576.jpg 768w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Sward-Cambodia-May-2024-3-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Sward-Cambodia-May-2024-3-2048x1536.jpg 2048w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Sward-Cambodia-May-2024-3-16x12.jpg 16w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Sward-Cambodia-May-2024-3-600x450.jpg 600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" />Not knowing this young man, I asked him a few questions and prayed for him.</p>
<p>After praying, I asked him, “How do you feel now?” He slowly opened his eyes, and then blurted out, “I feel even worse!” Everyone’s eyes were now on me.</p>
<p>In the course of our brief interaction, I’d manage to piece together that this young man, Bunla, had made a profession of faith a month or so ago. However, as the small church in his village was less than one year old, and most of its members are illiterate, he hadn’t received any follow-up teaching or personal discipleship since then.</p>
<p>Because of the occult practices, illnesses, alcoholism, and overall chaos that characterizes many tribal families in NE Cambodia, usually, it’s necessary to lead new believers through a process of spiritual deliverance and inner healing prayer shortly after they make a profession of faith. However, before this is possible, it’s important to lay a solid foundation of core biblical truths. And that takes time.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-26418 alignleft" src="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Sward-Cambodia-May-2024-2-300x225.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="225" srcset="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Sward-Cambodia-May-2024-2-300x225.jpg 300w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Sward-Cambodia-May-2024-2-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Sward-Cambodia-May-2024-2-768x576.jpg 768w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Sward-Cambodia-May-2024-2-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Sward-Cambodia-May-2024-2-2048x1536.jpg 2048w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Sward-Cambodia-May-2024-2-16x12.jpg 16w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Sward-Cambodia-May-2024-2-600x450.jpg 600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-26420 alignright" src="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Sward-Cambodia-May-2024--225x300.jpg" alt="" width="225" height="300" srcset="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Sward-Cambodia-May-2024--225x300.jpg 225w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Sward-Cambodia-May-2024--768x1024.jpg 768w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Sward-Cambodia-May-2024--1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Sward-Cambodia-May-2024--1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Sward-Cambodia-May-2024--9x12.jpg 9w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Sward-Cambodia-May-2024--600x800.jpg 600w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Sward-Cambodia-May-2024--scaled.jpg 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px" />Sitting across from Bunla, I knew I didn’t have the time necessary to really help him. So, I told him, “Bunla, I don’t know how to help you tonight. But Jesus does. He’s here. He sees you, inside and out and he loves you. Why don’t you ask Jesus about your problems?”</p>
<p>Bunla agreed. He closed his eyes and sat silently for a minute or two. When he opened his eyes again, I asked him if Jesus had revealed anything to him. Bunla’s demeanor had visibly softened. He looked at me and said, “Jesus said I don’t have peace, because I claim to believe in him, but don’t obey him.”</p>
<p>I was shocked. Bunla had never touched a Bible before and had received almost no Christian instruction apart from the simple gospel message. And yet, the Holy Spirit spoke directly to his heart, “<em>convict[ing] the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment”</em> (John 16:8).</p>
<p>Not long after, Bunla enro   lled in our Discipleship Training School (DTS)—a three-month residential program for Christian youth in our province. Since then, Bunla’s understanding of scripture, his love for the Lord, and his eagerness to serve others has grown tremendously.</p>
<p>During these three months, there have been some tough times too. But through it all, Bunla continues to testify to the joy and peace that come from Jesus.</p>
<p>In a few days, Bunla and the other DTS students will return to their villages. Please pray that <em>“in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation,”</em> which accurately describes their society and ours, these young people would, <em>“shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life”</em> (Philippians 2:15-16).</p>

<p>In March, the sun starts raining down its heavy, humid gold showers on our heads. We look for places to retreat out of the heat (in vain hopes that the shade will offer relief from humidity!) And in the heat, and in the shade, we do as the Cambodians do. We watch, and we wait. We notice that while the air may be heavy with golden heat, our river road has begun to boast golden showers of a different kind.</p>
<p>Cassia Fistula is a terribly unromantic name for such a stunning tree, and so I prefer the street name of “Golden Shower Flower”. It is not very creative, but it is much more apropos to its beauty. I savor the abundance and delicacy of these trees, cascading their wealth onto the street below. They are so lovely and so generous with their blossoms. God has blessed us abundantly in these days, and so we want to share our blessings with you, our witnesses to God’s beauty being worked out in our lives.</p>

<p>God is continuing to open doors among the Kavet people, who Scott visits each month. They are responsive to the Gospel and desiring of the transformation that God’s presence brings. Men stop drinking, husbands stop beating their wives, children have more food to eat when the peace of God is sown in hearts. We praise God for the many young people (both Kavet and Cambodian) who have been taught and trained through the Discipleship Training Schools, and are now back in their Kavet villages, leading house churches. Scott taught one week on our identity in Christ for the current two-month Discipleship Training School (DTS).</p>

<p>Five years ago, Scott began meeting with a small group of a few younger men in our church. They continue to meet weekly and have grown to around 15 men. Once or twice a year, the husbands get together with their wives and children. A few weeks ago, we had one such afternoon get-together at a nearby resort &#8211; totally planned by them. They ordered the food, planned games, and even brought babysitters for the kids after our lunch, so the adults could meet without interruption. Scott shared briefly with the group. He closed by asking the husbands to pray blessings over their wives. There were not many dry eyes in the room after this time together. This growing community of Cambodian Christians has been hands-down, one of the greatest blessings we have reaped in our years in Stung Treng.</p>

<p>Last summer I helped to restart a Sunday School program at our church. It had been long neglected, and, frankly, I had felt a bit too overwhelmed to add a full-on ministry to my plate. What finally drew me through my reluctance to start was the knowledge that all of the other moms at church felt the same way. We all had kids at home, husbands who needed to eat dinner, and we were all working in various capacities. No one person had enough bandwidth to take on Sunday School by themselves. So, in a desperate attempt to recruit more help, I pitched the idea of “the more the merrier”: the more teachers we had, the fewer times we would have to teach!!</p>
<p>By coercion and convincing, we managed to gather a group of 12 women. We sub-divided into groups of three. Each group was responsible to lead Sunday School only once a month. That sounded doable to us all, and so it was that we began. In a completely unforeseen turn of events, this group of initially reluctant teachers has transformed into an enthusiastic group of women. We have essentially started our own ‘mom’s group’ under the pretext of teaching Sunday School. I found the opportunity I was looking for to engage women on a regular basis. The ladies have become motivated participants on their own, and we now have women asking to join us as teachers because they see the fellowship we share with each other. It has become so much more than “just&#8221; teaching Sunday School. I cannot thank God enough for these young moms, and for the influence they are having on our church (as an additional bonus, many of them are the wives of the men in Scott’s small group!)</p>
<p><strong><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-26052 alignleft" src="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Sward-Cambodia-March-2024-Father-Son-Camping-Trip-300x174.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="174" srcset="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Sward-Cambodia-March-2024-Father-Son-Camping-Trip-300x174.jpg 300w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Sward-Cambodia-March-2024-Father-Son-Camping-Trip-1024x595.jpg 1024w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Sward-Cambodia-March-2024-Father-Son-Camping-Trip-768x446.jpg 768w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Sward-Cambodia-March-2024-Father-Son-Camping-Trip-1536x892.jpg 1536w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Sward-Cambodia-March-2024-Father-Son-Camping-Trip-18x10.jpg 18w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Sward-Cambodia-March-2024-Father-Son-Camping-Trip-600x349.jpg 600w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Sward-Cambodia-March-2024-Father-Son-Camping-Trip.jpg 2000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" />Home &#8211; Blessing Blossom #4:</strong></p>
<p>I am so proud of my husband and his gift of bringing people together. We have a tight-knit, small group of expat friends here in Stung Treng. Scott got the dads of sons together for a camping trip on an island in the Mekong River. (Did you know the Mekong River is so big that it has islands? And the islands have beautiful sand and creeks and incredible mangrove trees? It does, and they do!! You should come see them!!) The boys will be talking about this trip for the rest of their lives. I am thankful for an intentional husband and for the blessing of friendship with families who share our goals and dreams.</p>

<p>Zachary and Samuel are growing so big (Zachary’s feet are bigger than mine now!!) and independent. We are looking for more tasks to give them in the attempt to train their wings for flight in a few years (gulp). Among other things, they are currently working on some different foods in the kitchen. They are braiding challah bread here, and it is fun to see their personalities at play in the way they approach food. One is v.e.r.y slow and methodical, and one is ready to jump in there and get things done. Can you tell which is which from the picture? <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/16.0.1/72x72/1f642.png" alt="🙂" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> They are our biggest blessing always!!</p>
<p><strong>Blessing Blossom #6: YOU!</strong></p>
<p>We thank God for you and your prayers for us. Thank you, for your generosity that allows us to serve in Cambodia. Thank you to our families, for their sacrifice in sending us. Thank you all for your regular encouragement. You are a blessing to us, and we do not take you for granted!! May God bless you each today, to reflect his light and grace to those around you, as you walk into the world and relationships that surround you. May you be HIS golden showers of blessing to others!</p>
<p>Much love,</p>
<p>Andrea, for the Swards</p>

As I write this, the winds of change are blowing gently in Cambodia, and threatening to blow away our brief and beloved cool season already. And as I write this, many of <em>you</em> are shivering underneath piled feet of snow and shuddering winds!!</p>
<p>The winds of change in this new year also usher in a new ministry season for our family. For the past five years we have lived in Stung Treng and January to May (dry season) is the season in which Scott leaves our family at home for a week each month. He travels around to visit various Kavet villages and fellowships in the more remote areas of our province.</p>
<p>We’ve been sharing with you for some time that he goes out to the villages, but, thanks to another co-worker who has been traveling with him lately, we now have some pictures to share of these adventures. I thought some of you might wonder what exactly it means to “go out to the villages” &#8211; and decided to document this most recent trip for you as an example of what these weeks look like for our family.</p>
<p>A few days before his trips, we begin gathering “groceries” he will take to the villages, snacks to share during teaching sessions, or gifts for his hosts. This trip, we bought cinnamon bark at the market (“sweet wood”) as a hosting gift &#8211; because the villagers can boil it in their water to make it taste a little better. We bought a big bag of dried and shredded pork that can be easily sprinkled on rice, as a snack during teaching sessions. This is always a hit for the extra protein and vitamins it brings. Our missionary colleagues got a few precious bars of butter and blocks of cheese in the cooler!</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-25728" src="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Groceries.jpg" alt="" width="240" height="287" srcset="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Groceries.jpg 240w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Groceries-10x12.jpg 10w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px" /></p>
<p>Scott gets out his packing list each month to make sure he has all the needed supplies for a week away, with each night in a different village.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-25730" src="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Packing-List-225x300.jpg" alt="" width="225" height="300" srcset="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Packing-List-225x300.jpg 225w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Packing-List-9x12.jpg 9w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Packing-List.jpg 240w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px" /></p>
<p>The night before he leaves, Scott gathers up all the supplies and packs them into his little duffel bag that he will carry on the moto with him. Everything he takes needs to fit on the moto.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-25719" src="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Scott-Packing-218x300.jpg" alt="" width="218" height="300" srcset="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Scott-Packing-218x300.jpg 218w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Scott-Packing-9x12.jpg 9w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Scott-Packing.jpg 233w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 218px) 100vw, 218px" /></p>
<p>Bedtime the night before he leaves always involves an extra-long wrestling session with Zachary and Samuel. <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/16.0.1/72x72/1f60a.png" alt="😊" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-25724" src="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Scott-with-Boys-300x232.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="232" srcset="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Scott-with-Boys-300x232.jpg 300w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Scott-with-Boys-16x12.jpg 16w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Scott-with-Boys.jpg 311w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></p>
<p>A few days before he goes, people start dropping by the house with things they want to send with Scott &#8211; either for the two missionary ladies living on the Lao border or for different Kavet people Scott will visit. This trip, the truck has filled up fast!! He drives our truck two hours north towards the Lao border to the town of Siem Pang. Then, Scott parks the truck at the YWAM house there and transfers himself and his things onto a moto. Once on the moto, he crosses the river on a ferry and then makes the rest of the trip by moto.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-25731" src="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Packing-the-Truck-225x300.jpg" alt="" width="225" height="300" srcset="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Packing-the-Truck-225x300.jpg 225w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Packing-the-Truck-9x12.jpg 9w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Packing-the-Truck.jpg 240w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px" /></p>
<p>Once the car is loaded, Scott grabs his bag and is ready to leave. (That is my little rickshaw in the back <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/16.0.1/72x72/1f60a.png" alt="😊" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />.  I don’t do motos, so this is the family wagon when he is away <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/16.0.1/72x72/1f60a.png" alt="😊" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />.  )</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-25721" src="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Scott-Ready-to-Travel-230x300.jpg" alt="" width="230" height="300" srcset="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Scott-Ready-to-Travel-230x300.jpg 230w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Scott-Ready-to-Travel-9x12.jpg 9w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Scott-Ready-to-Travel.jpg 241w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 230px) 100vw, 230px" /></p>
<p>Last hugs are given to everyone…</p>
<p><a href="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Scott-with-Boys-saying-Goodbye.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-25723" src="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Scott-with-Boys-saying-Goodbye-209x300.jpg" alt="" width="209" height="300" srcset="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Scott-with-Boys-saying-Goodbye-209x300.jpg 209w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Scott-with-Boys-saying-Goodbye-8x12.jpg 8w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Scott-with-Boys-saying-Goodbye.jpg 223w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 209px) 100vw, 209px" /></a></p>
<p>… and off he goes!</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-25727" src="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Driving-Off.jpg" alt="" width="240" height="264" srcset="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Driving-Off.jpg 240w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Driving-Off-11x12.jpg 11w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px" /></p>
<p>Once at the YWAM house of our two missionary colleagues in Siem Pang, the truck is parked, and goods are transferred to the moto.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-25725" src="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Scott-with-Moto-300x225.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="225" srcset="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Scott-with-Moto-300x225.jpg 300w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Scott-with-Moto-16x12.jpg 16w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Scott-with-Moto.jpg 320w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></p>
<p>Scott wears long-sleeved shirts, even in the heat, because they protect him from sunburn on the long rides. Our friends’ house is a short ride to the river, and then the river is crossed on a ferry like this. Once the river is crossed, all the roads are dirt, and motos or rough “cow-tractors” are used for transportation.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-25732" src="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Scott-Ferry-Crossing-300x225.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="225" srcset="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Scott-Ferry-Crossing-300x225.jpg 300w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Scott-Ferry-Crossing-16x12.jpg 16w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Scott-Ferry-Crossing.jpg 320w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></p>
<p>Once in the village, studies are taught at night and during the day. Each day Scott travels to a new village. He usually makes these trips with one or two Kavet believers. This past year, our YWAM teammate, Alli Blair, began joining some of these trips as well. She is a jewel of a woman, who first began working with Cambodians in Thai refugee camps in the 1980’s. She went on to move to Burundi in the 1990s, where she spent the next 20+ years. Feeling like she was getting “too comfortable”, she asked God where he would like her. At a young 70 years old, and in the middle of COVID-19, she found herself back in Cambodia, working with the Kavet and learning a new language!</p>
<p>Leading an evening Bible study.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-25718" src="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Scott-leading-evening-bible-study-225x300.jpg" alt="" width="225" height="300" srcset="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Scott-leading-evening-bible-study-225x300.jpg 225w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Scott-leading-evening-bible-study-9x12.jpg 9w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Scott-leading-evening-bible-study.jpg 240w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px" /></p>
<p>Praying with and for all who come looking to meet with Jesus.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-25720" src="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Scott-praying-225x300.jpg" alt="" width="225" height="300" srcset="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Scott-praying-225x300.jpg 225w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Scott-praying-9x12.jpg 9w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Scott-praying.jpg 240w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px" /></p>
<p>From the young….</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-25726" src="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Young-Kavet-225x300.jpg" alt="" width="225" height="300" srcset="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Young-Kavet-225x300.jpg 225w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Young-Kavet-9x12.jpg 9w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sward-Cambodia-Janaury-2024-Traveling-to-Kavet-Villages-Young-Kavet.jpg 240w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px" /></p>
<p>…. to the old.</p>

We are very grateful for the generous prayer and financial support that she has received over the past 6 years.</p>
<p>As she embarks into her next phase of life, we would like to bless her with a financial Love Gift. We invite you to participate by contributing to the gift. Please prayerfully consider how much the Lord would have you give. The different options for how to contribute are listed below.</p>
<p>We also encourage you to read this note prepared by Sung Kim, FSW Regional Coordinator. As you will see, Sung has been an important part of Elise&#8217;s work!</p>

After a trip to Cambodia with several FSW pastors and leaders, she felt God’s call on her life to return to Cambodia for long term mission work (she served two years previously with another organization). During her time in Cambodia, she has been an invaluable member to the work in Cambodia using her gifts to minister to and teach young Cambodians. She also traveled to various Cambodia Friends churches to teach and encourage our local congregations. Her love for people and value for relationships spilled over to her care and support for our team in Cambodia, which will be missed.</td>

As a movement, they have a fourfold vision: 1) the gospel for every person, 2) disciple-making churches for every people, 3) Christ-like leaders for every church, and 4) kingdom-impact for every sphere of society.</p>
<p>With this third goal in mind (“Christ-like leaders for every church”), ten Cambodian and foreign Christian leaders met last year to discuss how we could work together to form and equip Christ-like leaders in the province of Stung Treng. The result of this meeting was what we’ve begun referring to as Monthly Bible School (MBS).</p>
<p>Like the rest of Cambodia, most people in our province live in rural areas.  The majority are poor farmers. And while most church leaders do their very best to serve their flock and fulfill their calling, many have had little education and/or almost no pastoral training.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-24671 alignleft" src="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/IMG_20230512_123906_555-300x225.jpg" alt="" width="245" height="184" srcset="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/IMG_20230512_123906_555-300x225.jpg 300w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/IMG_20230512_123906_555-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/IMG_20230512_123906_555-768x576.jpg 768w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/IMG_20230512_123906_555-16x12.jpg 16w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/IMG_20230512_123906_555-600x450.jpg 600w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/IMG_20230512_123906_555.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 245px) 100vw, 245px" />When we launched MBS in January, our hopes were modest. Given the time and money required for most church leaders to travel to the provincial capital, we knew it wouldn’t be easy for them to attend. Maybe we’ll get 15 people, we thought. Instead, we got 50. Since then, the number has only increased. We closed enrollment in March with 62 students.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-24669 alignright" src="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/IMG_20230512_124405_810-300x225.jpg" alt="" width="260" height="195" srcset="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/IMG_20230512_124405_810-300x225.jpg 300w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/IMG_20230512_124405_810-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/IMG_20230512_124405_810-768x576.jpg 768w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/IMG_20230512_124405_810-16x12.jpg 16w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/IMG_20230512_124405_810-600x450.jpg 600w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/IMG_20230512_124405_810.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 260px) 100vw, 260px" />Students come from churches of various denominations, spread all over our province. They meet for one full day every month. Classes are taught by Cambodian leaders and foreign missionaries. There’s a Bible overview class; a lunch-time elective on miscellaneous topics (currently on how to conduct Christian weddings and funerals), another class on how to study, teach, and preach the Bible (which I’m responsible for); a literacy class that runs parallel with mine; and a class on Christian doctrine. It’s a very full day!</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-24668 alignleft" src="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/IMG_20230512_124155_662-300x225.jpg" alt="" width="269" height="202" srcset="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/IMG_20230512_124155_662-300x225.jpg 300w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/IMG_20230512_124155_662-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/IMG_20230512_124155_662-768x576.jpg 768w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/IMG_20230512_124155_662-16x12.jpg 16w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/IMG_20230512_124155_662-600x450.jpg 600w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/IMG_20230512_124155_662.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 269px) 100vw, 269px" />To me, the unity among teachers and enthusiasm among students is evidence that the Lord is in this.  There’s been no attempt to plant organizational or denominational flags. Instead, teachers and students alike are motivated by one thing—to see the Kingdom of God come in greater fullness in our lives, churches, and province.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-24667 alignright" src="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/IMG_20230512_124127_855-300x225.jpg" alt="" width="263" height="197" srcset="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/IMG_20230512_124127_855-300x225.jpg 300w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/IMG_20230512_124127_855-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/IMG_20230512_124127_855-768x576.jpg 768w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/IMG_20230512_124127_855-16x12.jpg 16w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/IMG_20230512_124127_855-600x450.jpg 600w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/IMG_20230512_124127_855.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 263px) 100vw, 263px" />In the future, if the Lord directs, we’d like to start a new MBS cohort every year; and, perhaps, even offer night classes for working professionals. However, as is so often the case in missions, we don’t lack for students, but for teachers.</p>
<p><em>“The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore, pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest”</em> (Mt. 9:37-38).</p>

<p>I am now one month into my sabbatical, and I am really enjoying it! I’d love to share some highlights from this past month, and share a bit of what I’ve been up to.</p>
<p>In case you missed my newsletter last month, here is a short recap… I am currently in the States on a four-month sabbatical. I have been in a long-distance dating relationship for the last several months, and my boyfriend, Evan, and I are taking this time to spend time together in person to discern our next steps. Evan lives and works in Virginia, so my sabbatical time will be split between California <img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-24393 size-medium alignright" src="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/balboa-family-pic-300x169.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="169" srcset="https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/balboa-family-pic-300x169.jpg 300w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/balboa-family-pic-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/balboa-family-pic-768x432.jpg 768w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/balboa-family-pic-18x10.jpg 18w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/balboa-family-pic-600x337.jpg 600w, https://friendsmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/balboa-family-pic.jpg 1334w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" />and Virginia. I am incredibly thankful to EFM for granting me this time, and for your prayers as Evan and I spend time together over these next few months.</p>
<p>During the first week of my sabbatical, Evan and I spent time with my family in San Diego and Orange County, and we had a great time! This was Evan’s first time meeting my family, and also his first time to California. It was a special time to finally be able to introduce Evan to my family, and to soak up quality time with them.</p>

<p>Before flying out to Virginia, we also had the opportunity to visit Granada Heights Friends Church (my home church), and they hosted a nice lunch for us afterward. It was fun to introduce Evan to my church community and to see many dear friends there. Though we didn’t have much time to see friends, we were glad to have dinner with the Kims and the Hoshis right before we flew out to Virginia!</p>

<p>For the past two weeks, we’ve been in Norfolk, Virginia, where Evan lives, and I plan to be here for another month or so. Evan works in international student ministry in residence life in a dorm called “The Globe” among international students who are students at Old Dominion University (ODU). It’s been really fun to meet many of his students and his community here! His community has been incredibly welcoming to me, and I’ve really enjoyed participating in his student events and meeting his friend and church community here!</p>

<p>I’ve really enjoyed the rhythm I’ve fallen into since being here in Virginia. I’m staying with Evan’s friends very close to ODU’s campus and also close to the Globe, so I am able to walk everywhere, and I’ve loved that (especially as the weather is warming up here)! I’ve also enjoyed using the university’s gym and library, and making the most of the time I have on my own while Evan is busy working. It feels like an ideal rhythm for my sabbatical to have some personal time for reflection and reading in the library, and to have a nice space to process my experiences and learn and grow in this season.</p>
<p>My sabbatical continues be a tremendous gift of time and space for me personally, and for Evan and me as we navigate our next steps. Thank you so much for praying for me and Evan, and for praying for my sabbatical. I’d love to ask for your continued prayers and we soak up this time together and seek the Lord for discernment about our future together. Thank you, friends!</p>
