COVID-19 Testimonio Pandémico de Ucrania

Abe y Diane Bible han vivido en Ucrania durante mucho tiempo y sirven allí con Ministry Developers Network (Red de Desarrolladores Ministeriales). Todos nosotros siempre estamos en busca de lo que Dios está haciendo, ¿no es así? Pero a veces podemos verlo mejor en retrospectiva que cuando estamos en el proceso. COVID está impactando al mundo, este mundo quebrantado. ¡Pero somos mas que vencedores en Jesús!

He estado pensando en los últimos meses en todas las restricciones de viajes y reuniones, y comencé a buscar lo que Dios estaba haciendo en las áreas en donde habíamos estado teniendo luchas. Una de ellas es que se le pidió a Abe que fuera el mentor de Román, el hombre que ha sido designado para dirigir el evangelismo y la plantación de iglesias en toda Ucrania. Román fue puesto en esa posición el verano pasado, pero Abe se sintió frustrado de no poder conectarse con él para verlo y desarrollar un plan y una visión. Así que, con el coronavirus y la nueva herramienta (para nosotros) de ZOOM, Abe decidió realizar el curso “Experiencia con Dios” de Blackaby. Así que se reunieron varias veces a la semana durante un par de meses y Abe pudo desarrollar una muy buena relación con Román. Pero aún sentía que era difícil para Román aplicar los principios a su ministerio.

Transcurrió otro mes y Abe sintió que sus conversaciones anteriores sobre lo que se necesitaba en la actual Ucrania para alcanzar a los perdidos y plantar iglesias no habían penetrado realmente. ¡Y luego, de repente, pareció entrar en acción! Román hizo un viaje de 4 horas para visitarnos y pasar un par de horas hablando sobre el ministerio. Abe pudo ver que algunas cosas comenzaban a filtrarse y luego Román voluntariamente se ofreció para volver un par de semanas más tarde. El ya estaba emocionado y absorbiendo todas las cosas de las que Abe le había hablado.

Ahora está listo para hacer planes y comienza a desarrollar una visión. Él participo en el taller de evangelismo de septiembre que Abe tuvo para 85 hombres (¡alabado sea Dios, había pocas restricciones en ESE momento!). Román ya conoce este material pero fue un repaso. Ahora Abe y él tienen un plan para llevar esta capacitación a algunas de las provincias (así como a la reunión mensual que Abe realiza en Kiev) para que los hombres evangelicen en la próxima primavera, y si Dios bendice, habrá frutos y el comienzo de nuevas iglesias en varias áreas. Sin COVID nunca se hubieran conectado a larga distancia con tanta frecuencia ni hubieran construido la relación necesaria para poder comenzar a trabajar en estrecha colaboración. Llevamos aquí 30 años. Abe conoce Ucrania y esta gente y es un hombre de extraordinaria visión. ¡Pero esa visión debe transmitirse a otros para que suceda! A pesar de COVID, o tal vez debido a COVID, ¡está sucediendo!

¡Nada detiene a nuestro Dios poderoso! Los hombres con los que Abe ha estado trabajando durante los últimos años también han continuado guiando a otras personas hacia el Señor durante el verano ya que están haciendo evangelismo uno a uno y esto no tiene por qué detenerse.

Y un artículo final influenciado por COVID para mí, Diane, a nivel personal. Se me desarrollaron problemas en un ojo y el oftalmólogo (hace una semana, antes de escribir esto) dijo que era un desprendimiento de retina y organizó una cirugía para mí en Kiev, una semana después de hoy. No pudo ser posible antes debido a la acumulación y las restricciones de COVID. Y si salgo de esta cirugía hoy con visión reducida, lo más probable es que se deba a la espera, debido al COVID. ¿Y dónde está Jesús en estas situaciones? Aquí mismo conmigo. Su presencia continúa nunca falla. Él ya sabía con mucha anticipación sobre COVID, sobre mi ojo, sobre las limitaciones donde vivimos. Y así, descansamos en Su omnipotencia sin importar el resultado físico, sabiendo que estamos a Su cuidado. Tener total confianza en Él y el resultado de esto y el futuro. “El señor es mi pastor; Nada me faltará.”

COVID Pandemic Testimony from Ukraine

Abe and Diane Bible have lived in the Ukraine for a long time and serve there with Ministry Developers Network. Diane, who grew up in Ohio, wrote the following story for our encouragement. When you finish the last paragraph please take a moment to pray for Abe, Diane, and the ministry God has given them. Thank you.

All of us are always looking for what God is doing, aren’t we? But sometimes we can see it better in retrospect than when you are in the process. COVID is impacting the world, this broken world. But we are victors in Jesus!

As I was thinking over the past few months and all the restrictions on travel and meetings I began to look for what God was doing in places that we had been struggling with. One of them is that Abe was asked to mentor Roman, the man who has been appointed to head up evangelism and church planting all across Ukraine. Roman was put in that position already last summer but Abe had been frustrated and unable to connect with him and see him develop a plan and a vision. Well, with the coronavirus, and the new tool (to us) of ZOOM, Abe decided to walk through the “Experiencing God” course by Blackaby. So they met several times a week for a couple months and Abe was able to develop a real rapport with him. He still felt that it was hard for Roman to apply the principles to his ministry.

Another month lapsed and Abe felt like their earlier conversations about what was needed in present day Ukraine for reaching the lost and planting churches had not really penetrated.—and then, suddenly it seemed to kick in! Roman made a 4-hour trip to us to spend a couple hours talking about ministry and Abe could see a few things beginning to percolate. And then he volunteered to come again a couple weeks later—and he was excited and just soaking up all the things that Abe had talked about.

Now he is ready to make plans and beginning to develop a vision. He attended the September workshop on evangelism that Abe had for 85 men (praise God there were few restrictions at THAT time!). He already knows this material but it was a refresher. Now Abe and he have a plan to take that training to some of the provinces (as well as the monthly meeting Abe holds in Kyiv) to get men evangelizing so that next spring , if God blesses, there will be fruit and the beginnings of new churches in several areas. This will take some convincing of provincial superintendents and finding men who are passionate about Jesus and committed. But what Abe was longing for a year ago is coming together.

And without COVID they never would have connected long distance so frequently and built the needed relationship so that they could begin to work closely together. We’ve been here 30 years. Abe knows Ukraine and these people and he’s a man of extraordinary vision. But that vision needs to be passed on to others in order to see it happen! COVID notwithstanding, or maybe because of COVID, it is happening!

Nothing stops our mighty God! The men Abe has been working with the past several years have also continued to lead people to the Lord over the summer because they are doing one on one evangelism and that doesn’t have to stop!

And a final COVID influenced item for me, Diane, on a personal level. I developed issues with one eye and the ophthalmologist (a week ago from this writing) said it was a detached retina and arranged surgery for me in Kyiv—a week later–today. Nothing earlier possible because of the backlog and restrictions from COVID. And if I come out of this surgery today with reduced vision it will most likely be because of the wait—because of COVID. And where is Jesus in these situations? Right here with me. His presence continues unfailingly. He knew far ahead about COVID, about my eye, about the limitations where we live. And so, we rest in His omnipotence regardless of the physical outcome, knowing that we are in His care. Having total trust in Him and the outcome of this and the future. “The Lord is my Shepherd; I do not want for anything.”

Hemos estado recibiendo algunas historias de nuestros misioneros y líderes nacionales sobre lo que Dios está haciendo en medio de la pandemia. Estamos compartiendo estas historias con ustedes deseando que sean de animo y también recordarles el seguir levantando a nuestros hermanos y hermanas en Cristo alrededor del mundo en oración.

Esta historia proviene de Diane Bible. Ella y su esposo, Abe, sirven en la Red de Desarrolladores de Ministerios en Ucrania. La familia Bible está conectada a la Junta Anual de Iglesias Evangélicas Amigos – Región Este.

Vera es nuestra colega y compañera de trabajo ucraniana. Hemos trabajado estrechamente con ella durante los últimos 20 años y la hemos conocido y asesorado durante ocho años antes de eso. Ella es de Crimea, que fue anexada a Rusia hace unos años de una manera muy discreta durante el tumulto en el gobierno ucraniano. Vera finalmente tuvo que mudarse a Kiev porque se volvió logísticamente imposible para ella hacer algo desde Crimea (incluidas las conversaciones diarias que ella y Abe tenían).

Ella sabía que tendría que ponerse en cuarentena por dos semanas después de llegar allí. Para una mujer muy activa, esto era realmente una dificultad.

Sin embargo, al atravesar la frontera, descubrió que tendría que someterse en cuarentena en una habitación en la frontera con otra mujer a quien, por supuesto, no conocía. ¡Solo se les permitía salir de la habitación tres veces al día para ir al baño! Vera no tenía su computadora portátil con la que trabajar porque este año, debido a esa caminata de una milla de largo, había decidido llevar sus archivos en un disco y luego cargarlos en una computadora prestada.

La señora con la que estuvo en cuarentena tenía 79 años, era muy educada y había supervisado una fuerza laboral de 3,000 personas. Iba a Crimea porque su hijo se estaba muriendo de cáncer. Los funcionarios no considerarían sus circunstancias. Entonces, ella y Vera pasaron mucho tiempo intenso juntas durante un período de dos semanas, lo que condujo a muchas conversaciones interesantes. La dama era ucraniana ortodoxa de profesión (que generalmente es solo un nombre, no alguien que realmente va a la iglesia). Al final de las dos semanas, tenía un gran respeto por Vera como creyente comprometida y devota. Prometió ir a la iglesia evangélica de la cual Vera le dio la dirección. What is God doing in Ukraine during the pandemic?

We have been receiving some stories from our missionaries and national leaders about what God is doing in the midst of the pandemic. We are sharing these stories with you so that you can be encouraged and also remember to keep lifting up our brothers and sisters in Christ around the world in prayer.

This story comes from Diane Bible. She and her husband, Abe, serve with Ministry Developers Network in the Ukraine. The Bibles are connected to Evangelical Friends Church – Eastern Region.

Vera is our Ukrainian colleague and co-worker. We have worked closely with her for the last 20 years and have known and mentored her for eight years before that. She is from Crimea, which was annexed by Russia a few years ago in a very under-handed way during tumult in the Ukrainian government. Vera eventually had to move to Kyiv because it became logistically impossible for her to do anything from Crimea (including the daily conversations she and Abe had).

Every summer, she returns to Crimea for several weeks to visit her family and relatives and to follow up with pastors there in a somewhat oppressive atmosphere. This year she had to delay her trip because we were processing documents that had to be done in a government office—which did not open back up until June 16. She left that same day to go to Crimea. In the best of times it is a strenuous trip because there is a mile of “no man’s land” between the two countries that you have to walk. She knew that she would have to self-quarantine for two weeks after she got there. For a very active lady, this was indeed a difficulty.

However, upon arriving across the border, she discovered that she would have to quarantine in a room at the border with another lady whom of course she did not know! They were only allowed out of the room three times a day to go to the bathroom! Vera did not have her laptop with her to work on because this year, due to that mile-long walk, she had decided to just take her files on a disk and then load them onto a loaned computer.

The lady she quarantined with was 79, highly educated, and had overseen a work force of 3,000 people. She was going to Crimea because her son was dying of cancer. The officials would give no consideration to her circumstances. So she and Vera spent a lot of intense time together over the period of two weeks, leading to many interesting conversations. The lady was Ukrainian Orthodox by profession (which usually is just a name, not someone who actually goes to church). By the end of the two weeks she had a very high respect for Vera as a committed and devout believer. She promised to go to the evangelical church of which Vera gave her the address. She knew where it was and said she would definitely follow up. She is seeking, and even more so as her son lies on his deathbed.

God loves this lady, Ludmilla, and is wooing her! Through extraordinary circumstances! Pray that she would find the Lord Jesus Christ, as well as her son, and that we would get to celebrate with them in Heaven one day!

Abe y Diane Bible están conectadas con la Iglesia Evangélica de los Amigos de la Región Este y se han estado asociados con la Red de Desarrolladores de Ministerios para capacitar a los líderes de la iglesia en Europa del Este desde 1978. Su énfasis principal en los últimos años ha sido motivar a los líderes a hacer evangelismo y plantar iglesias en Ucrania . Esto incluye talleres y recursos mensuales para ayudar a los hombres en sus vidas espirituales, así como equiparlos con herramientas de ministerio. ¿Cómo está afectando COVID-19 a quienes viven en el área donde ustedes viven y ministran?

Nuevas restricciones vienen regularmente. Cualquier persona mayor de sesenta años no debe abandonar su hogar, excepto por necesidades. Todos deben usar una máscara en cualquier lugar en público. Está creando crisis financieras para las iglesias y los ministerios cristianos, ya que las personas no se reúnen para dar.

¿Cómo está afectando esta situación al ministerio que ustedes llevan acabo?

Todos los talleres han sido cancelados y es posible que no tengamos otro hasta el próximo otoño. Si se levantan las restricciones, la gente estará muy ocupada con la sobrevivencia e intentando que las cosas vuelvan a la normalidad, por lo que dudamos de que haya oportunidades. Abe está asesorando a través de conferencias de Zoom. Él está estableciendo un horario para que las personas realicen su propio “taller” donde estén con un compañero. El está trabajando en cómo alentar a las personas cuando el contacto es tan limitado.
La gente continúa usando los materiales de Libertad Financiera. En este momento, los grupos pequeños aún pueden reunirse, en menos de 10 personas. Y habrá un grupo de líderes en Ucrania que tomarán el curso Experimentar a Dios por Blackaby a través de reuniones por Internet.

¿Cuáles son algunas oportunidades que están viendo para compartir las buenas nuevas de Jesucristo con aquellos que aún no lo conocen?

Mientras los plantadores de iglesias todavía estén permitidos en las calles (y lo están) tienen muchas oportunidades de compartir el Evangelio con personas necesitadas que están más conscientes que nunca de la brevedad de la vida.
Muchos de los hombres con los que trabajamos tienen un ministerio en su propia ciudad o en una ciudad vecina. Ya tienen muchos contactos personales. Es un momento en que las personas pueden estar aún más abiertas al Señor. Algunos de ellos distribuyen alimentos a los necesitados. Esto les da una oportunidad extra para hablar sobre la eternidad. Algunos de ellos realizan pequeños estudios bíblicos para los buscadores: las personas tendrán más tiempo ahora para ese tipo de cosas. Y todo esto es crítico a medida que nos acercamos a la Pascua. Es muy sobresaliente en el calendario ortodoxo, involucra muchas tradiciones (y supersticiones). Y eso también crea apertura espiritual.

¿Y cuáles son dos o tres peticiones de oración que podemos usar mientras oramos por ustedes y por los que ministran?

Oren por Abe mientras trabaja en cómo ayudar a los hombres a mantener su enfoque y continuar con nuevas oportunidades en esta situación sin precedentes. Y sabiduría para determinar si hay alguna posibilidad de hacer algo por Zoom o simplemente enviando instrucciones para que ellos realicen sus propios “talleres”.
Oren mientras desarrollamos materiales, aún encaminados, de plantación de iglesias, así como la posibilidad de algunos recursos nuevos que podrían usarse para atraer a las personas al Reino.
Oren para que Dios use esta pandemia como una fuerza poderosa para atraer a las personas hacia Él. Aquí no tenemos los recursos médicos que tiene Occidente. Muchas personas morirán a través de esto, ya sea que se identifique correctamente como COVID-19 o no. Que Dios use el miedo a la muerte para atraer a las personas a nuestra Esperanza viva.

EFM COVID-19 Updates | Pray for Ukraine

Abe and Diane Bible are connected to Evangelical Friends Church-Eastern Region and have been partnering with Ministry Developers Network in training church leaders in Eastern Europe since 1978. Their main emphasis the last few years has been motivating leaders to do evangelism and church planting in Ukraine. This includes monthly workshops and resources to help the men in their spiritual lives as well as equip them with ministry tools. Faithful men trained by Abe are expanding this ministry into Russia.

How is COVID-19 affecting those who live in the area where you live and minister?

New restrictions come regularly. Anyone over sixty is not to leave their home except for necessities. Everyone must wear a mask any place in public. It is creating financial crises for churches and Christian ministries as people are not meeting to give.

How is this situation affecting the ministry you lead?

All of the workshops have been canceled and we may not hold another one until next fall. If restrictions are lifted, people are going to be very busy with survival and trying to get things back to normal, so we doubt there will be opportunity. Abe is mentoring via Zoom conferencing. He is setting up a schedule for his workshop people to hold their own “workshop” where they are with a co-worker. He is working on how to encourage people when contact is so limited.
People continue to use the Financial Freedom materials. Right now small groups can still meet—under 10. And there will be a group of leaders across Ukraine who will be taking the Experiencing God course by Blackaby via internet meetings.

What are some opportunities you are seeing for sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with those who don’t know Him?

As long as the church planters are still allowed on the streets (and they are) they have many opportunities to share the Gospel with needy people who are more aware than ever of the brevity of life.
Many of the men we work with have a ministry in their own town or a neighboring town. They already have many personal contacts. It is a time when people may be even more open to the Lord. Some of them distribute food to the needy. This gives them an extra opportunity to talk about eternity. Some of them hold small Bible studies for seekers—people will have more time right now for that kind of thing. And all of this is critical as we come up to Easter. It is very high on the Orthodox calendar, many traditions (and superstitions) involved. And so that also creates spiritual openness.

And what are two or three prayer requests that we can use as we pray for you and those you lead?

Pray for Abe as he works through how to help the men to keep their focus and continue with new opportunities in this unprecedented situation. And wisdom for determining whether there is any possibility to do something by Zoom or just sending out instructions for them to hold their own “workshops.”
Pray as we develop materials still on the church planting track, as well as the possibility of some new resources that could be used to draw people into the Kingdom.
Pray that God would use this pandemic as a mighty force to draw people to Him. We do not have the medical resources here that the West does. Many people will die through this, whether it is ever identified correctly as COVID-19 or not. May God use the fear of death to draw people to our Living Hope.
