The Luke 10 Initiative

The Luke 10 Initiative is EFM’s prayerful process for discovering where God is leading us to start five new mission fields as part of our Five-Year Goal. Because EFM serves the mission efforts of regions/yearly meetings, churches, and individuals, we depend on their active involvement in this discernment journey.

Through the Luke 10 Initiative, four types of participants come together for Luke 10 Think Tanks to listen, pray, and identify potential locations and people groups that meet EFM’s CAN GO criteria. These insights guide the formation of Luke 10 Exploration Trips, where teams travel to promising areas to build relationships, observe, and further discern God’s leading.

The discoveries made through these trips and think tanks ultimately shape recommendations to the EFM Board about where to launch new mission fields, specifically in places where all five CAN GO criteria affirm God’s direction.

Why did EFM choose this Five Year Goal?

According to the Joshua Project, there are still over 7,000 unreached people groups! This is about 3.23 billion or 41.6% of the world’s population who has not heard the Good News of the gospel.

Where are we going as we explore where we carry out the Five Year Goal?

The Luke 10 Initiative is how EFM will determine where the five new fields will be started for our Five-Year Goal! If you or someone you know might be seriously interested in exploring the idea of missionary service, whether that be for a couple of years or for a long-term career, EFM is calling you a “future missionary” and designing opportunities for you- you can learn about them here!

The Seven Fields that EFM has Committed to Launching so Far!

Mexico

Led by: EFC- MAYM | Partner: Mexico Yearly Meeting

Mexico Yearly Meeting (MYM) has a vision to plant Friends churches in every state of Mexico and has already taken steps in that direction. There are 32 states in that country, most of which have no Friends churches. Evangelical Friends Church-Mid America(EFC-MAYM) is feeling led to help explore through Luke 10 Trips the possibility of partnering with MYM to establish a new field in one of those states.

The Shuar People of Ecuador and Peru

Led by: NWYM

Steps have already been taken by EFM over the last several years to launch a field among the under reached tribe called the Shuar who live in the jungle of southeast Ecuador. Much more help is needed to actually launch that field. Northwest Yearly Meeting(NWYM) is taking the lead on organizing exploratory trips to that area. Evangelical Friends Church-Eastern Region (EFC-ER) has also expressed interest in this opportunity.

South Sudan

Led by: EFC- MAYM | Partner: Evangelical Friends Church-Rwanda

There has been quite a bit of interest in planting churches in this part of Africa. Evangelical Friends Church-Rwanda is already taking steps in that direction. EFC-MAYM is taking the lead to organize some Luke 10 Trips that will help explore the next steps in launching that field.

Greece

Led by: NWYM

There are young adults from both NWYM and EFC-MAYM who have spent time among Muslim refugees in Greece. They are feeling drawn to planting churches not only among the refugees but also among the Greeks themselves. NWYM is taking the lead to explore these possibilities through Luke 10 Trips.

Northeast Brazil

Led by: RMYM

There is a small group of Friends churches in northeast Brazil that border an immense area where there are very few evangelical churches of any kind. This could be a whole new field. Rocky Mountain Yearly Meeting(RMYM) is taking the lead on organizing exploratory trips to that area. There may also be some interest from EFC-ER in this opportunity.

Persian Gulf States

Led by: EFC-ER

There is a large population of Nepali people who go to the Gulf Countries of the Middle East for work. There are also many Bhutanese/Nepali people who have come to the United States as refugees. Many of them have found Christ, some even before reaching the U.S. They have a vision for planting churches among the Nepali workers in the Gulf Countries. EFC-ER is taking the lead to organize Luke 10 Trips that will explore that possibility.

 The Balkans- Eastern Europe

Led by: NWYM

About this Field: There are very few believers in the region of southern Croatia, southwestern Bosnia and Herzegovina, and western Montenegro.  EFM is sending a team to spread the Gospel of peace in a region known for centuries of conflict.  They dream of making disciples and planting churches.

The Two Fields EFM is Continuing to Explore

Tanzania

Led by: EFC-MAYM | Partner: Burundi Friends Church

About this Trip: There has also been quite a bit of interest in planting more churches in Tanzania, especially on the part of Friends in Burundi. They are already supporting some work in western Tanzania. EFC-MAYM is taking the lead to organize Luke 10 Trips to that country in order to explore other opportunities. EFC-ER and Indiana Yearly Meeting have also expressed interest in this opportunity.

Minorities of The Greater Mekong Region in Southeast Asia

Led by: FSW

This group is in a closed country that US missionaries cannot access, yet there is a significant group in nearby countries who are accessible. FSW is taking the lead on organizing Luke 10 Trips to explore an opportunity to raise up and equip leaders among the people group in Cambodia to take the Good News to the group in the closed country.
